Day 59 Sept. 6, 2002 - Live Feed Updates  from BB3 Updates.com

The Golden Veto - by Charlie Toft

An old friend makes a reappearance in the house on Friday morning: the slogan "Expect the Unexpected" on the plasma screen in the living room. And thank goodness: the last week Jason was Head of Household was a real snoozer, and things aren't likely to be any more interesting two weeks later, with Gerry and Roddy gone.

Jason is first out of bed, and the first to see the screen. It makes him chuckle; as a fan of the show, he was also the most positive about the houseguest-reentry twist. He may not want a lot of drama surrounding his reign as Head of Household, though. He sits in the dining room playing cards, looking like the ghost of Gerry past. He takes an occasional glance at the screen, as if wondering if he'll get new information.

After an hour or so the others begin to wake up. Danielle, who has thought the game out so well, sounds most upset about a possible disruption. Amy moans when she sees the news. They're pretty sure another houseguest won't be coming back at this late stage, but are wondering what it might mean-could the evicted houseguests be making nominations this time?.

Lisa thinks the twist is definitely designed to make things more dramatic-she says they aren't doing this to keep the houseguests entertained (there's been talk that maybe a celebrity will visit them). Lisa announces that she had a dream about being evicted and having to go live with Tonya-I suppose we all deal with stress in our own way.

Jason says that they are about to be called into the Diary Room to get their reaction to the idea of a new twist. About a half hour later, we see Jason in the Diary Room rehearsing his lines--we rarely get a mistaken Diary Room transmission. Jason reads the lines "Welcome to the dinner party from hell," and refers to something called a "Golden Veto", which will be the last chance to save a nominee. They tell him he should pretend to be surprised when he's reading the message-Big Brother scripted? Say it ain't so. The feed cuts out at this moment.

Within a few minutes, Jason emerges and reads the news to the others. The twist with the Golden Veto is that if a nominee can use it to save themselves, assuming he or she wins it. Jason reveals some other news: nominations will not be made until tomorrow, and both the announcement of whether the veto will be used and the eviction vote itself will take place during the TV show next Thursday.

The houseguests enjoy their lunch and chat some more about the various deceptions of Roddy-for the record, it's now been a good 40 hours since he left, but they just can't let him go. Jason brings up that Wednesday is September 11. Danielle hopes that they can get some clothing to wear for that day as a show of solidarity.

Jason goes to the storage room for some lizard food, and Danielle follows. She says Jason should talk to "him" first before nominating him. She also asks if he'd like to arrange the vote to come out a tie, and Jason says yes. It looks like Amy and Marcellas will be put up, as the two of them and Lisa had more or less agreed to. Such a plan to split the vote would allow Danielle to get rid of Marcellas while still appearing to keep her allegiance to him. However, she later tells Jason and Lisa that she made a deal earlier in the game to take veto Marcellas's nomination if she had the opportunity--another example of a promise made early in the game coming back to haunt. There's even some talk about Jason nominating Danielle as a decoy instead of Amy.

Amy and Marcellas are talking out on the hammock like they're old friends again. Marcellas wonders if people will be waiting to meet him with guns when he gets out, based on the viciousness of his Diary Room entries. Amy comments that the two of them might be kept in the house longer, since they've possibly come across as unsympathetic.

The houseguests are instructed to make candles. They've been very inactive all day-abs class is fading in popularity-and Marcellas wants to stay that way with regard to candlemaking. The others go back to rehashing Roddy yet again, remembering how he would tell them all in turn that they were smart. They realize that their obsession is probably the way Roddy would want it, as it proves he was the dominant figure in the house.

Marcellas asks Danielle who Jason is thinking of nominating. Danielle says she doesn't know (untrue) but says that it's Amy's turn to go (also untrue). The group works on their candles and they seem to be enjoying themselves. Lisa, who is under the weather, is apprehensive about the notion of a night food challenge; but also recalls that other night activities, such as Sheryl Crown and the luau, have been fun.

We're about to see. Jason gathers them together just before 9, and says they are heading to a formal dinner in the backyard. Everyone scrambles to get dressed, and they really do look nice. Jason announces that it's the "dinner from hell" we heard about earlier. Danielle and Marcellas are one team; Amy and Lisa the other. A team will be shown an unappetizing food item, and they have to decide if they should try to eat it themselves or pass it to the other team (with the possibility they might get something even worse). The houseguests have only one minute to consume everything on the plates, and each round is worth two days-failure means peanut butter and jelly.

We don't get to see all of it, but we see Lisa struggling with sushi, Danielle decrying her pigs' feet, Amy trying to choke down poi, Marcellas wincing with jungle curry, and Lisa and Amy gagging on haggis. Yes, there's some spitting up as well. The upshot is that no one eats a complete dish, and it's peanut butter and jelly for all, which for now seems like a much better deal than having to eat a sheep's stomach. Non-competitor Jason offers to eat a little of everything in sympathy. Although he is Head of Household, Jason is on the restricted diet now too because both teams failed in every round.

Danielle visits Jason in his room later to make sure he's not mad that they did so poorly in the competition. He curtly answers that he's fine, and please don't talk about it anymore. She is surprised by this flash of anger, which provokes Jason to apologize-he just needed to be alone. Marcellas observes that the competition was designed to be impossible, and to get this group of friends in a quarrelsome mood.

The women begin discussing how they are being perceived by the evicted houseguests. For Danielle, it seems to have recently dawned that her incendiary Diary Room talk might have an audience among the future jury. Lisa is worried about her final words to Gerry. Amy points out that's it's not a real likable group left in here-except for Jason. They start considering possible voting breakdowns at the end, including the likelihood that men and women might vote differently. Danielle says she wants to be in there at the end with someone that will make them have to think, but then says that Jason will be tough to beat.

Jason is off making a candle while this chat is taking place. Was Danielle making idle conversation, or planting a seed hoping that Lisa and Amy would take the bait? Could there be a crack in house's longest-running alliance?

This is why we keep watching.
