Day 58 Sept. 5, 2002 - Live Feed Updates  from BB3 Updates.com

Roddy Leaves, Jason HOH - by Charlie Toft

The houseguests are up early (before 9) and shoved outdoors on Thursday morning, as they were during the set-up for last week's food competition. So all across America, people sit before their monitors for their "24/7" live feeds from the Big Brother house…

…Only to see the front of the house for hour upon hour. Occasionally, as if to keep the control room on its collective toes or reassure us that the house hasn't been seized in a terrorist attack or the houseguests haven't been forcibly removed for excessive backbiting, the feeds cut back in momentarily. Music is blasting periodically: "Another One Bites the Dust", a very sensitive choice on eviction day, is among the tunes heard.

It appears the music is designed to keep the houseguests entertained during a long lockdown, and the feeds were cut so there wouldn't be issues with rights (the same reason we go to the front of the house whenever a houseguest starts to sing). Speculation that there are juicier motives behind the feedless state-Amy walking out, for example-is apparently bogus. It's a shame: if nothing else, Roddy has a unique way with words, and if this is his last day we are being deprived of a final look at his trademark mix of bluster, baloney, erudition, heavy-handed flirtation, and flashes of real wit.

Well past noon now, and other than the occasional shot of the lizards or the living room, it's all Front of the House, all the time. There's apparently rehearsal indoors during part of this time too. Finally, after approximately 5 hours with virtually no coverage of life in the house, the feeds come back on around 1:30 PM. All the houseguests are still there, and it appears we haven't missed anything disruptive. There's another indoor lockdown underway, but the music is off now.

The houseguests are talking about cell phone rates, so it appears we haven't missed a lot. When the lockdown ends, Marcellas heads inside to pack. Lisa and Roddy are lying on the basketball court, though it's too overcast for sunbathing-in fact, they feel a few drops of rain. Lisa tells him "Thank you for being my friend." Roddy says it was good that they had this chance to hang out (after Chiara left, is what he's not saying here). They wonder if Chiara will be there when he leaves the house.

More interruptions in the feeds (hardly unusual for an eviction day). The houseguests are referring to having seen footage of themselves, presumably as preparation for the Head of Household competition. They also got to see the original beginning of the TV episodes-the one they used before players started getting evicted. Danielle says that Gerry looked good-Gerry? What scene from house life could she possibly be talking about? Amy frets about everything she's had to pack, with her belongings now augmented by the America's Choice loot. Most of the houseguests will be showing off their new clothes tonight.

Only moments before the show is to begin, Roddy tells Lisa she's the reason he couldn't make the promise to Amy, and that he thought he'd get rewarded for his loyalty. For once, he seems genuinely plaintive. He asks Lisa to tell him: if it is me leaving tonight, what did I do to make you guys turn against me? Lisa doesn't give a direct answer, advising him to watch the tapes. He presses, but she's trying to run out the clock. And she's succeeds in stalling--on the feeds at least, as they are cut for the duration of the show.

The first thing that becomes clear when the feeds are restored is that it will take these houseguests a long time to forget the now-departed Roddy. Lisa and Amy seem downcast, with Lisa feeling that Roddy used his final words to essentially blame her for his leaving. Of course, they are comparing notes too, and Amy finds out that Roddy told Lisa that the houseguests forced her not to use the veto. Amy disputes this, saying she made the decision on her own. To the unashamedly happy Danielle and Marcellas, this serves as proof that they did the right thing in evicting an obvious manipulator.

Amy points out that the "girls" have come back-it's the first time in the game that women have outnumbered men in the house. She tells new Head of Household Jason he can't go around asking them who they want nominated this time, because there are so few houseguests left. Jason says, possibly kidding, that he will pull names out of a hat. Amy says that all her packing and unpacking is giving her carpal tunnel.

Alone, Jason and Danielle laugh about their failed effort to throw the competition. Together with the others, they rehash events and evictions from the last two months, the series of events that led to these five being here. The video footage seems to have put them in a reminiscing mood. They look at the black-and-white photos and give their impressions of the long-gone Lori and Tonya, and wonder again if Chiara was there to greet Roddy (Lisa says if she was watching what he was doing and saying in here, probably not). Marcellas says Roddy shouldn't have toyed with their emotions, and Lisa claims he made the mistake of underestimating the women.

Amy is still saying that she deserved to go tonight. Danielle tries to make her feel better but soon gives up. Amy and Jason are also disappointed that water polo will be ending, since Marcellas won't take Roddy's place. Jason's room is ready, complete with gift basket. Marcellas whines for an inordinately long time that Jason got better stuff he did.

As the night rolls on, there is no game talk but rather some "I want to get drunk" talk from Amy-they've broken out the red wine. Amy chats with Jason in the backyard-not very flirty, but as Jason recently predicted, she's gravitating toward the last eligible male in the house. The other three are still talking about Roddy. Lisa wonders if discussing the past is necessary, as it brings up the difficult subject of evictions, but Danielle says they'd be foolish not to try to learn from the mistakes of their predecessors.

By midnight they are, incredibly, ready for bed. Is this the same house, and the same houseguests? Perhaps they installed some sort of sleeping gas-dispensing vents during the long lockdown. Marcellas decides to bunk down in the "Mash unit"-he jokes that he's turning into Josh now. Jason settles into bed listening to the Moulin Rouge soundtrack, and for one of the few times since this season began, the Big Brother houseguests are fast asleep before the sun rises in the East.
