Roddy's Hail Mary - by Charlie Toft
Summer is now over, and as the leaves will soon wither and die, so too is the action in the Big Brother house waning, with half the cast gone and no opposing alliances anymore. Still, the houseguests showed on Tuesday that they still have the capacity to put on a comical and apparently impromptu show for us. The individual houseguests seem to spend the entire morning rolling over in bed, realizing nobody else is up, and then lying back down. Just before noon Marcellas and Jason decide to get up, with Jason handling pool-cleaning duty and Marcellas whipping up some French toast. Jason swats a fly with a package of bacon, and Marcellas, surprisingly, does not have a heart attack. Marcellas makes a shrewd comment, saying that they tend to vilify the person who's in line to be evicted (to make it psychologically easier, he implies). He tells Jason, Lisa, and Danielle he hopes it's not like that for them when they have to begin going after each other. And as if to demonstrate the point, they now proceed to say how upset they are with how Roddy has been acting-putting Amy on the spot like that and expecting her to use the veto. Lisa asks them to confirm that Roddy will not get a sympathy vote. The other nominee does not escape negative attention either. Lisa accuses Amy of having a swelled head based on having left the house and finding out that people recognize her. One never knows how seriously to take the ever-moody Marcellas, but for now he's declaring his friendship with Amy over, saying that if she wins the next Head of Household he'll have to kill her in her sleep. There's more criticism of her alleged provocative behavior around Roddy. Jason and Danielle are already looking ahead to the next Head of Household competition, which is significant because the winner will not be able to compete when it gets down to four houseguests-the week one voter will have sole power to evict. They're feeling confident enough to talk about throwing the competition. They even have an optimal scenario planned out-Amy wins, nominates Jason and Lisa, Danielle wins the veto, takes Jason off the block, and Amy is forced to nominate Marcellas. It all sounds pretty cocky, given the difficulty the houseguests have had getting Amy to play along. And in mid-afternoon, the day takes a comical turn. It starts when Lisa notices lizard poop in the sink. She says that they will have to admit to the producers that they give up-they simply can't take care of the lizards. Marcellas says that the lizards will be "voted out" later today, and he calls a house meeting to see to this burning issue. Jason, who is the closest thing the lizards have to a caretaker these days, asks if he can be the sympathy vote. The lineup is settled: Jason will be the defense attorney, Marcellas is to be the prosecutor, and Roddy will be the judge. The most serious charge against them is cold-blooded (literally) murder of the crickets. Sunbather Amy, eager to participate in something that seems likely to make it onto television, jumps up to say her piece, forgetting that her bikini top was untied. Amy is to be a witness in the lizard hearing, only fitting since they have pooped on her. She asks Danielle if she is saying bad things about her, and Danielle's not-terribly-candid response is that if he has any criticisms to make, she'll say them to Amy's face. And the case of Big Brother Houseguests v. Godzilla and Rodan is under way. The evicted houseguest pictures, Huck the shark, various gnomes, and Lisa sit in the jury box. Marcellas states that the lizards were supposed to brighten up the house and instead have brought only misery. Jason offers up a half-hearted defense-he doesn't want to go against the will of the house too much. Amy does a dramatic turn in black dress and white shawl, describing how her relationship with Godzilla went south. The testimony of a Mr. Jenkins is interrupted when his disguise is ripped off, and "he" is revealed to be "Big Brother 3 houseguest Danielle." Roddy keeps a lighthearted touch as judge. Jason asks the jury to look into its collective heart and give peace a chance. The verdict: while the women are still opposed to having the lizards around, and Roddy couldn't care less, Marcellas doesn't want this to mar his reign as Head of Household-it would look cruel. They agree to keep the lizards for now, but might re-open the case later. And a genuinely funny interlude in a tense and often tasteless game comes to an end. The late afternoon is then given over to workouts and laundry and Amy cooking a quesadilla. She offers to give her share of the evening's wine to Roddy, and lets Jason know that she's having a hard time emotionally right now. Lisa makes a quick comment to Danielle about how Amy owes them something-perhaps talking about persuading her to nominate Marcellas next week. Since we're overdue for a scene, Amy heads to the bedroom after dinner. Danielle goes in to offer consolation, basically telling her that it's a game and we have to do difficult things sometimes. After dinner, Lisa confesses to Roddy that after 8 weeks of thinking about the game, it's all starting to get to her. She discloses that she once had a tumor removed from the middle of her forehead, which is more interesting than the long spiel Roddy has in store. Roddy flatters her (he says the stupidest people on earth are her ex-boyfriends) and offers up the amazingly persistent case for not evicting him (the vote is tomorrow morning). He repeats that both Amy and Marcellas went back on firm deals, taking advantage of his "honesty". Roddy wants them to acknowledge that his refusal to promise to vote for Amy even if she vetoed him was the most important moment in the game so far, because he was too ethical to go back on his alleged obligation to Lisa. Marcellas tells Danielle his own bright idea for next week: Amy wins head of Household and nominates Lisa and…well, he'll just volunteer himself. They can then vote out Lisa, Amy would be powerless the following week, and Marcellas would be in the final 3 with Danielle and Jason, the way he's wanted it (of course, Danielle has been whispering to Lisa about possibly getting Marcellas out next week). They start complaining about Amy's cooking now. Roddy's last-minute attempts to sway the voters are not going over well. Lisa tells Danielle that she's getting tired of his nightly attempts to manipulate her, adding (and this is one of the funnier things we've heard her say) that she's surprised Chiara hasn't come over the walls yet. Amy offers the tentative opinion that by asking her to use the veto, Roddy just might be a little selfish. This doesn't stop her from going out to the hammock again for one of Roddy's passive-aggressive critiques. Everyone gets to bed early, turning in a little after 1 AM. Everyone but Roddy, that is, who heads out to the hammock with his cigar-you can almost hear him thinking that there must be something more he can do before the vote. Lisa comes out later, but they end up mostly chatting about her family. In the same way Gerry's eviction shortened mornings for feedwatchers, it now looks like another eviction may shorten the other end of the day.
