Free Clothes - by Charlie Toft
It's our "day of rest" again. Can the houseguests possibly exceed the epic levels of sloth they exhibited last Sunday, when breakfast was being served at 2 PM? As it turns out, no. Danielle is awake before 10 to take care of a few chores, pray, and start breakfast. Marcellas is next up. The (possibly bonding?) Roddy and Lisa, up very late, figure to be in bed a while longer. Marcellas and Danielle clean while the others snooze. The microwave clock stopped overnight and they underestimate the actual time by about an hour in resetting it. After everyone arises, Roddy starts talking about relationships and offers his words of wisdom to the not-so-worldly Jason. Lisa and Danielle have a quick, skeptical word about Amy and the veto. There's not a lot left for these six to talk about. Early afternoon conversation (dominated by Roddy) ranges from Howard Stern to Survivor to theme parks. The America's Choice arrives in mid-afternoon just in time to wake feedwatchers up. The houseguests have been awarded clothes, which is what they had wanted (these phone-in winners have tracked pretty closely with what the sentiment in the house is). They are allowed 90 seconds to browse and then another 90 seconds to take away everything they can wear, or can stuff inside what they already have on. They put on bathing suits to give themselves maximum body space (there was an identical opportunity last season). They strategize about ways to sneak clothes onto their bodies without going though the trouble of actually putting it on-hanging clothes off a belt, for instance. Roddy suggests just grabbing whatever you can and sorting it out later. There's a long lull and they drift away from America's Choice and onto fascinating topics like their favorite words. The feeds don't get to carry the America's Choice, but we see the aftermath, which finds the houseguests trying things on-some more successfully than others. Not all the clothes are particularly attractive, either, but you get what you pay for. Roddy is able to fit into pants with a 31-inch waist. Danielle did well with dresses but couldn't grab any pants in her size. Marcellas will keep the Prada shoes, naturally. There are a good many famous labels mixed in with the houseguests' loot, and also some monstrosities like the shirt Roddy puts on, which looks like something you would have worn in high school in 1959. Jason follows suit, seeming to go for the That 70s Show look, complete with weird new hairstyle. He admits the shirt he's wearing is something he never would have bought. There's some resentment from Lisa and Danielle at the fact that Amy grabbed up so many pajama bottoms and doesn't want to share them. All their preening and changing pretty well kills the rest of the afternoon-this is a group that had been badly in need of this distraction. As the shadows lengthen and the wine is uncorked, Lisa and Danielle continue to vent on the subject of Amy's supposed bad mood. There's continuing concern about tomorrow's veto ceremony. Amy is slinking around in a white dress (she can't wear it anymore after Labor Day, she laments), and Marcellas complains about her acting like a beauty queen and mutters "Shut up!" under his breath. Amy tells Lisa that Roddy's charm hasn't worked on her, which seems to please Lisa for now. Danielle brings up the idea of a possible change of plans-voting Amy out Thursday instead of Roddy. Marcellas is so annoyed with her right now it sounds like he might be interested, but Jason says they should stick with their original plan-though he adds she's been driving them crazy enough to give them cause. They wonder if Amy is stealing their beers again. As Roddy works on the elliptical trainer, Lisa and Danielle continue to bash Amy, with Danielle making fun of her southern belle persona. Once again, she accuses Amy of trying to flash the male houseguests. She has replaced Gerry as the scapegoat, for now. Amy is on the booze warpath. She asks Jason for his beer, and tries to keep Marcellas from seeing her drinking. Marcellas is getting angry and wants her to go to bed before she gets too drunk. Away from the Head of Household, Lisa, Jason and Danielle talk about whether Amy or Marcellas should go next. Jason is in favor of losing Amy, but Danielle seems more worried about Marcellas-more evidence these strong allies don't agree on everything. Lisa points out that there is likely to be another twist that affects the final outcome. Amy has not gone to bed, or stopped drinking. She's now visibly and audibly drunk, and heads out to the hammock. Roddy is nearby, waiting to do some last-minute campaigning. As Amy tells him what a jerk Marcellas is for insisting that she stop drinking, she rolls right out of the hammock and lands on her face. At least she's taken off the white dress. Roddy has little reaction, but the reaction of the group inside is to bash Amy even more for her pathetic display. Jason tries to be a little conciliatory, saying Amy is just hard to be with when she drinks, but the other three are appalled by Amy in varying degrees, again accusing her of flashing and ripping her inability to hold her booze. They say she's less classy than even Chiara. Jason wonders if Big Brother gave them alcohol to create some pre-veto drama, knowing what would likely result. They're so consumed with anger, one wonders if Amy might get evicted after all. They are beside themselves with worry that Roddy might be able to work his magic, but the Roddy/Amy conversation is fairly banal, with virtually no hardcore game talk, not that Amy would be in the mood. Eventually Roddy goes inside and just leaves her out there, close to the hammock's edge. After a bit, Jason comes out to help her inside. It's before midnight but Jason and Danielle are heading to bed early. Amy enters the Head of Household room and sounds very sober all of a sudden. She tells Marcellas that Roddy worked her very hard (it didn't really look that way-we've seen him much more insistent), but she isn't going to buckle and use the veto. She brings up her observance that people sacrifice themselves for Roddy and never get anything in return. With the veto looking increasingly unlikely, Roddy may now be trying to turn his efforts to getting two votes to stay. And he continues to work Lisa very hard. They stay up for a good two hours after the others again tonight, using some sign language, including some secret under-the-covers "chat"-and who knows what he's saying? Interestingly, he admits to being the one who unplugged the microwave the night before to throw the clock off. Whether or not Lisa is being swayed by this aggressive campaign on Roddy's part is something we'll just have to find out in a few days.
