Amy Gets Veto Power - by Charlie Toft
You can say this for Roddy: you know he's going to put up a fight. And right away Saturday morning, after maybe 4 hours of sleep, he starts his campaign by chatting with his main adversary, Danielle. He insists that Marcellas broke his word by nominating him, citing their hot tub summit meeting. Roddy says he knew about Marcellas's original plan to nominate both him and Danielle (the "clash of the titans"). Danielle considers this. He promises not to nominate her if he stays in the house; Danielle seems to be thinking about this too. Roddy also sneaks in some self-pity, saying he can't believe that he was "played" by everyone and that he's worried about Big Brother portraying him as a sucker. Roddy is trying to increase Danielle's doubts about Marcellas, but he's also doing a reprise of Chiara's infamous "unfair" tirades. Speaking of whom, he also implies (continuing a theme from last night) that he was trapped into being with Chiara. He's sorry Chiara is being held against him now, but he didn't want to have a public break with her either. How well did this all work? Well, Danielle tells Amy and Marcellas that he was trying to work her hard, but no go. Amy lets Danielle know what went on with Roddy the previous night, how she now realizes he's used people, and how she'd like to win the veto and rub his face in it. Danielle, of course, does not want Amy anywhere near the veto-no one trusts her with it-but she keeps this to herself. Danielle calls him "the devil" yet again, while Marcellas, trying a new line of attack, likens him to David Koresh. The houseguests mill around at noontime, waiting for the veto competition. They talk about weight loss, with Lisa offering the alarming information that she once lost 35 pounds in two weeks. The feeds disappear to the front of the house for the competition… …and when they return, Amy is wearing the necklace-she is the first nominee to win the power of veto. There's a good deal of concern on the part of Marcellas and the others, all of whom are on record as wanting Roddy out. In their position, you can always threaten the veto holder with eviction if they exercise the power on the other nominee (in fact, Roddy made just such a threat to Marcellas when Amy was evicted in week 3), and there's general agreement among them that she'll have to be talked out of it, since Roddy will no doubt try his best to talk her into it. Another complication is that Amy once promised to veto Roddy if she had the chance-this deal was made before Roddy nominated her so one might think it's null and void now, but Roddy could always try to bring it up. Danielle requests God's help that Amy not use the veto. Hard to tell if the Almighty was listening, but Amy soon approaches Marcellas and Danielle to tell them she will not be using the veto. She says she'll be doing it for Josh, Chiara, and Gerry, who (she believes) were voted out due to their links with Roddy. Amy seems particularly offended that he's been dissing Chiara, who went so far as to leave her "woobie" for him; and trying to turn her against Marcellas. Lisa says "Welcome to the game, Amy." But somehow, it's hard to believe this is the end of it, with Amy's formal announcement still 2 days off. Amy and Jason have apparently won massages. Jason is a little concerned; he's never had one and is a bit nervous about being touched by a stranger. He insists he won't get totally naked. Things settle into a midafternoon lull-Marcellas explaining one of the nuances of solitaire to Jason is typical of the conversation. The houseguests learn about the America's Choice for the week, which will give them the chance to receive toys, clothes, or sports gear. They're all for the clothes. While the others rest, Amy continues to think about her upcoming veto speech. She seems to be rehearsing it to herself. From the way Amy talks about it, she's thinking along the lines of a big emotional blowout a la Gerry. She asks Jason if he knows what it's like to be betrayed, and says she feels so empowered right now. Amy wants to apologize personally to Chiara once the show is over. Amy has the chance to try out her new strategy momentarily, after Roddy emerges from the Diary Room. She flirts pretty vigorously, telling him about a suggestive dream she just had. Roddy seems friendly enough, though perhaps wondering why Amy is so chatty. She and Jason are now ready for their "Aquamassage", a contraption set out on the basketball court that looks a little bit like a tanning bed. It's hard to hear them over the noise of the machine, but they clearly enjoy it immensely. Jason overcomes his initial fear of massage. In the kitchen, Marcellas and Danielle, working on dinner, rake Roddy over the rhetorical coals some more. They try to decide when and how often he's lied to them. The houseguests play with some massage equipment that they are apparently getting to keep. Dinner is burgers and fries, which everyone praises. It's noted that they haven't had French fries since they entered the house. Things break down into Marcellas and Danielle gossiping and strategizing inside, and the others outside. Danielle says that she feels bad that Chiara was misled by Roddy, though she throws in a few criticisms of her too. She says that Gerry was dishonest in saying "I have your back" to both of them. Danielle also says-and this has been hard for viewers to confirm-that Amy has been exposing herself to Roddy again. Marcellas isn't happy about all the time Amy spends with Roddy. He growls that she'll have to go next week. Roddy and Amy, he says, aren't suited for the tough endgame, because they're too dramatic. Out on the patio, Roddy tells a story about having his credit card number stolen from an Internet porn site (live and learn). Lisa and Jason reminisce about each week so far (this is the start of week 9) and what the key events were. Finally, Roddy and Amy move out to the hammock. Amy tells Roddy he's the type of guy people like to make sacrifices for, and that there's responsibility that goes with that: "You would be a very good cult leader!" she says. He defends himself against what she's implying-that he's allowed friends to get evicted to save him. Amy wonders why he won't at least promise to vote to keep her if she vetoes him, and Roddy responds that it's Marcellas's fault they're both in that position-a non-answer, in other words. Roddy calls Marcellas "the new Josh." He insists she'd have a better chance to stay in the house if she vetoes him-how her chances could be better than they are right now, with 3 people ready to evict Roddy, is not made clear. He basically admits he's not sure how many deals he has sitting out there. The other houseguests, chatting inside, reveal that they don't trust Amy to keep her cool around Roddy. They are all on board, it seems, with voting Amy out next. When Roddy finally gets to bed, after 3:30, he feels the need to chat with Lisa some more. Lisa is really just polite, but Roddy is quite flirty, which makes you wonder if the feeds are on in Eric's firehouse back in Connecticut. He's working both the Amy-veto front and the try-to-get-two-votes front, but it looks like an uphill fight, even for a manipulator extraordinaire.
