Food Competition & Nominations are a Mess - by Charlie Toft
Friday turned out to be one of the more emotional days in Big Brother history. And one of the longest too, as the houseguests are awakened at 7:45 and told to prepare to go outside. Maybe the first shift is just bored with Gerry gone. They are promised that something fun will await them once they are allowed back in, and breakfast and coffee has been set out, but none of that seems very important to the sleepyheads at a time that is possibly a good three hours ahead of when they otherwise would have woken up. Most of them try to get back to sleep right away in the various chairs. It's too early for much conversation, though Roddy takes the opportunity to criticize Jason for being too sheltered because he allegedly only surrounds himself with other religious people. There are intermittent shots of the crew moving items in and out of the house, and when the houseguests are allowed back in, they learn that it's food competition time. They are told to put on bathing suits once again, which no one seems very happy about. Marcellas explains that they are to find hidden medallions that represent a day of the week, and they have only 90 seconds. They at first believe they are going to the backyard (even though they were just out there), but then Marcellas directs the gang to the onetime High Rent District, where the floor is covered with pies. The medallions are hidden inside them. The feeds cut in and out when once they are restored we learn that all the medallions were found, and the houseguests celebrated by throwing pie at each other. Amy manages to lose a ring in the melee, and Danielle eventually finds it. Everyone is having a genuinely good time, even clean freak Marcellas, whose howls of horror don't have their usual full force. They go outside to wash (the inside is locked down for cleanup), and Roddy entertains everyone by fully disrobing to wash. The combination of the early wakeup and then full exertion for a few minutes leaves the houseguests near-comatose outside. No one approaches Marcellas with game questions, and nominations are only a few hours away. Danielle has heard that Marcellas might nominate Amy, and she mentions this to Jason, who had been wondering if it was his time. Neither can believe he would really nominate his best friend, and both worry that Roddy might slip the noose another week. Danielle is wondering if Marcellas has a deal with Roddy that might preclude him getting nominated. She tells Jason that they might have to "make a deal with the devil" if they can't get rid of him. Jason has some regrets about not nominating Roddy when he had the chance (now he says so). But Danielle later tells Marcellas the same thing she told Jason last week: I'll support your decision even if I don't agree with it. Marcellas asks Danielle point-blank if she is "overextended" with respect to her promises. She says she isn't, though we know she has implied she wants to be in the last 2 with both Marcellas and Lisa, in addition to her longstanding Jason alliance. Marcellas says he knows she's close to Jason. He's pretty clear about wanting the last 3 to be those who had nothing to do with the original "Cartel", which would mean "Goodbye Lisa" at some point. Danielle says she thinks the others still underestimate the two of them. Marcellas promises she'll be pleasantly surprised when the nominations come. Danielle gets up to start work on a chef's salad. Marcellas plops Huck the shark in a chair and starts talking to, uh, "him". And just after 5 PM, it's nomination time. When the feeds return, Amy is seated at the table looking like someone has run over Bucky the dog. In an aside to Danielle, Marcellas says that "it's time for him to go"-the other nominee is Roddy. The camerman focuses on Roddy's hockey jersey with the number 13. When Amy finally speaks, she tells Lisa that it was the tone of Marcellas's speech that got to her, and not so much the nomination. He apparently told her she didn't take the game seriously enough, but she believes that having fun should be paramount, since you can only have one winner. She's tried to explain to Marcellas that she can separate the game and personal feelings, but he doesn't get it. Lisa agrees that it was a harsh tone. Roddy challenges Marcellas, who has told him that there were trust issues-specifically over the pressure tactics used the week Lisa and Eric were nominated. He also says that Roddy's associations with Josh, Gerry, and Chiara were problem areas. Roddy denies that there ever was a deal with Gerry, and wants to know why Marcellas didn't come to him privately. He thinks he's being persecuted for his friendliness, and warns Marcellas and Danielle that they've made a mistake. Marcellas tells Jason that while he wants Roddy to go this week, he doesn't believe in "decoys", and Amy is on the block for a reason. He accuses her of trying to take Chiara's place as the provocative woman in the house. When Amy comes in to see him, Marcellas tells her that he nominated not the two strongest players, but the ones whose game-playing he respects the least. He implies her frequent talks with Roddy are a problem, and she insists they rarely talk about the game. But she and Marcellas hug, and the friendship--for now--seems intact. Danielle believes that Marcellas made a good decision walking away from his previous talk with Roddy, because he's so good at making you believe his line. Roddy challenges Marcellas, claiming he broke a previous deal (referring to the hot tub deal made not long after Amy's return). Marcellas says it was only a one-week deal. Both players are being a little coy on the subject of deals, but it's late in the game and who can keep track of the promises anymore? There's halibut for dinner, and very little talking. Roddy is itching to vent to somebody, and the only option right now seems to be Lisa. Out in the hammock, Roddy complains that he's supposedly been nominated because no one trusts him, even though both Danielle and Jason have said they trust him 100%. Lisa reminds him about the week she was nominated with Eric (that's why she's included in the "no one" who trusts him), and Roddy doesn't really have a good answer, except to say that he people are scared of him and it's unfair for him to be blamed for what his friends did. He believes that Danielle is getting people to do her dirty work. Lisa listens patiently for what seems like forever. Marcellas and Danielle predict that Roddy is going to be working overtime to try to sway the others into vetoing him, and that he can't be counted out because he's so charismatic. And perhaps feeling a need to talk to his major adversary, Roddy comes to see Danielle, who is already in bed. He offers a defense of his friendships with controversial people like Josh and Chiara. She says that his ability to talk Chiara into turning on Lisa was what scared her the most. Past 3 AM, Roddy zeroes in for the kill with Amy, eventually getting to the point: would you use the veto for me, and I promise to do it for you? But he tells her he wouldn't necessarily vote to keep her in the house, if Lisa is the alternative. Brilliant. Just before bed, Amy tells Marcellas that she can now see what Roddy is all about, and she wants the veto precisely so no one can use it. She thinks Roddy has been manipulating people all along. Who said fewer houseguests mean less drama?
