Gerry Out, Marcellas HOH - by Charlie Toft
Big Brother live feed watchers have witnessed several changes in the last seven weeks, but the (apparent) impending departure of Gerry is perhaps the biggest jolt of all. The two or three hours a day when he has been the only active houseguest will be gone forever and can now be devoted to non-Big Brother activities. No more 8 AM laundry, no more watching Gerry cheat at solitaire, no more middle-aged men riding Gwen, the elliptical trainer. (Sniffle.) In what may be an effort to give us the idea that exciting things might still happen in the morning even with Gerry gone, Jason bursts out of the Head of Household room at 9:45 Thursday morning, frantically waking everyone up and telling them to gather immediately for a major announcement. Gerry had already been sitting at the kitchen table, but the others stumble out of their bedrooms for what Jason says will be a "bummer" of a message. And the announcement is: Big Brother is shutting down the High Rent District, the big bedroom that has been home to the game's most frequent scheming. Gradually closing off bedrooms has been a part of previous seasons too. The houseguests are given one hour to move. They aren't terribly broken up by the news, though Marcellas thinks the other bedrooms are disgusting. The prospect of sleeping on cots or with lizards…it's not really Marcellus's thing. He hides under the bed in a last-ditch effort to stay. His eviction from the house may go easier than his eviction from this bedroom. Dunkin' Donuts has provided the houseguests with a new coffeemaker, assuring that their name will live on even after the weeklong donut orgy ends. Big Brother is running the show theme music on a loop, which seems to irritate the houseguests as much as it bugs all of us. Roddy and Lisa have stayed in bed; Roddy is telling her how much he enjoyed their talk last night, but the charm isn't laid on with its usual thickness-still too early. There isn't really time for them to nap however, since the gang is soon locked out, presumably while the rooms are being renovated. The usual round of sunbathing and chitchat commences. There wouldn't be any real action until after the live show anyway, but the early wake-up has made the houseguests even draggier. The setup for the Head of Household competition is visible in the yard. Gerry is quiet and mostly playing cards; Amy her normal talkative self. It's the seven-month "birthday" for her dog Bucky, and she refers to his need for braces. After they are allowed back in, Marcellas confides to Jason that he's concerned about how much time Amy has been spending around Roddy. Lisa tells Danielle about her trip to the Diary Room late last night, when she saw Roddy and Amy talking in an intimate way, and how he came in the bedroom later to try to persuade her nothing was up. The group prepares for going on TV. Danielle fights with her hair, again saying that she really needs to win Head of Household so she can get a perm. Amy and Marcellas freak out when they see the lizards eating mice. Gerry has one last chess match with Roddy. He gives Marcellas a big hug and asks him to look him up. Gerry has dressed up nicely, probably sensing the writing on the wall. And when he is seen on the feeds exiting the house for the last time, he takes a quick look back. When the feeds inside come back on, the houseguests are talking about the surprise they received on the live show (for a split-second they were faked into thinking Amy had been evicted). They joke that they should start giving random Diary Room answers to strategy questions as retaliation. The new Head of Household, Marcellas, notes ruefully that Roddy has already sought out Amy for conversation. In fact, Roddy is warning her that it might be a wise idea not to refer to herself as the house's new "first lady". And Marcellas tells Danielle that Roddy might be making a mistake if he thinks Amy has his ear when it comes to making game decisions. Winning Head of Household this late in the game is a major thing, guaranteeing that you're one week closer to the finish, but Marcellas tells Lisa that he wishes Danielle had won it. Roddy, in one of his less subtle hints, asks Lisa if its time to give Big Brother a romance story. Lisa remarks (not seriously of course) that the two of them and Amy might be able to work something out. Roddy is doing a lot of nervous chatting. He and Jason discuss how it's getting more difficult to bid farewell every Thursday, and that they have probably spent more time with each other than with their closest friends. Lisa and Danielle are considering what might happen next. Lisa admits that she enjoys talking to Roddy but that he makes her uncomfortable. Danielle agrees-he's great company, and that's what makes him dangerous. She tells Lisa that she expects Roddy to be nominated along with Jason (to eliminate the chance he would campaign), though she thinks she could go up too. They see Roddy hanging around Amy but believe that she is starting to annoy him. In spite of Marcellus's grumbling about Amy, they don't see him nominating her-it would really look bad if he did that. Before dinner arrives, Jason says that he's prepared if he finally gets nominated this week. Danielle tells him she would try to use the veto in that case, but Jason worries that it might show their cards. He would like Lisa's and Amy's word that they would vote to save him, if he did get nominated. He thinks it might be smart for Marcellas to nominate Amy along with Roddy, because the other options all have risks. Marcellas moves into his new room. In a letter, his sister orders him to stop wearing socks with his flip-flops. The houseguests settle down to a Chinese dinner. Afterwards, Lisa and Amy marvel at the spider webs again. Lisa and Roddy head out to the hammock once more, where she bats down his efforts to chat about the game. She says she ought to apologize to the Internet, because it looks like a no-scheming week. Roddy agrees, saying that any plotting still going on couldn't be kept secret with only 6 left. This talk is also noteworthy for Lisa admitting she doesn't know what plums are. And in fact, it is a very quiet night, possibly as a result of the abrupt wakeup this morning with no intervening naps. While chatting on the patio later with the women, Roddy says he feels the game is pretty much over. We should just try to have fun from here on, he says. Translation: please don't evict me. They offer up some memories of Gerry, mostly admiring of how he tried to fit in with a much younger group and occasionally succeeded. Danielle and Jason get to bed relatively early, sleeping the sleep of the (probably) safe in what they are now calling the "Low Rent District" (the Tiki bedroom), but Roddy stays up late talking with Lisa (playing some chess), and finally chatting with Amy. Before we know it, it's well after 4 AM again. The man does like to hear himself talk.
