Jason wins Power of Veto - by Charlie Toft
As the houseguests' bedtime hour edges ever close to sunrise, 9:30 wake-up calls such as the one Saturday are becoming noxious to the houseguests, even when Big Brother promises a special treat upon awakening. Perhaps the gnome-painting of the previous night was just too draining? It appears the "treat" is just that day's shipment of donuts, so the 4 houseguests that are still asleep when they arrive aren't missing much. The veto competition is today, and for a change there just might be some drama, as the "please nominate Roddy-why didn't you nominate Roddy?" faction has a chance to force Jason's hand. Danielle brings coffee and donuts to some of the late risers. They've been provided with 3 dozen donuts, which will be too many assuming Lisa and Roddy both stick to their goal of eating just one a day. Roddy is flattering Amy, telling her that she has probably been the main focus of the TV show every week she's been in the house. Danielle tells Jason that she expects an interesting veto competition, based on how noisy the backyard setting-up has gone. The veto competition takes place off-camera-all we can tell is that it involved the selection of ping-pong balls-but when the feeds are restored we see that Jason has become the first Head of Household to win the veto power. As Jason seems unlikely to veto his own choices, it looks like drama-free sailing for the next several days, especially since neither Amy nor Gerry are campaigning yet or otherwise making a scene. Danielle mentions to Lisa that she was so close to winning the veto. Seems like it's always that way… The house settles into discussion of movie likes and dislikes-the idea that they might get to see a movie eventually has been kicked around frequently, with major fan Danielle leading the charge. Aspiring screenwriter Roddy gets involved with this chatter. Lisa and Danielle talk about missing their families, with Danielle mentioning that it's getting tough for her to be away from home, and that's why she'd really like Head of Household. Jason has some encouraging news for Danielle, telling her that Marcellas re-affirmed his loyalty to her in their pre-nomination chat yesterday. The gang heads out to do some sunbathing, with Amy joining the rest for a change. Gerry reveals that he met his wife at a nude beach-for the record, Gerry and Lori are the two houseguests who appear to have had the most experience with public nudity. Gerry breaks the news that they will be deprived of use of the hot tub for a few days, due to "misuse". Marcellas emerges from the Diary Room-he was in there with his gnome-and begins his "frolicking", which is what they're calling their aimless running through the backyard sprinkler. Marcellas is also the houseguest who has taken the most interest in the inflatable shark that was used in the most recent food challenge; he calls it "Huck" and pretends to attack the others. These people are seriously understimulated. Amy is reluctant to go in the pool and pretends to be afraid that the men will throw her in. The houseguests are told of the America's Choice vote for the week-a video from home. There's general agreement that Danielle should win (Jason adds the other house parent, Gerry, as another good choice). Danielle thinks her not winning would be a sign that she's unpopular with viewers. Amy points out that either she or Gerry will have the experience of being recognized by strangers in public, and having "fans". She says she's not really concerned, since she's had male stalkers before. Out of earshot of Gerry, Amy says that he spent a long time alone in the storage room in the middle of the night, painting the gnomes, and this might indicate he's breaking down. Closer to dinnertime, Gerry reveals to Danielle that if he had won the power of veto, he would have used it to veto Amy, thereby presumably forcing the nomination of Roddy. Danielle is excited about what might have been. They both recall ruefully that Roddy was the one who talked to Jason last before his decision. Gerry claims that Roddy once said putting him on Big Brother is like putting Crocodile Dundee on Survivor. Gerry grumbles a little about the way Amy has been behaving in the house since her return-her drinking and general whininess-but he concedes that she's young, and doesn't do any real campaigning against her. Gerry tells Danielle she'll have his vote at the end for sure. She asks him if he knows what Roddy thinks about her, and he says Roddy does not underestimate her. He suggests he has a "scenario" he'd like to discuss with Jason, and Danielle urges him to do so. Danielle fills Marcellas in on the details of her talk with Gerry. They're still wondering if Gerry has a deal with Roddy, but chuckle that if Gerry is voted out, Roddy is off the hook. They remind themselves that Amy has been pampered all her life and really doesn't know how to conduct herself. Marcellas tells Danielle that she would have his vote if she was ever nominated with Amy, and she reminds him that they have a longstanding mutual deal to use the veto to save the other. Roddy and Gerry have one their little intellectual chats about stale coffee and genotypes. Lisa jokes about how they're being asked in the Diary Room about Marcellas's newfound friendship with his gnome. Gerry returns from the Dairy Room with a card from his wife, a thank-you to the house for the anniversary present (it was a tree). After dinner Gerry is on the patio, sounding a little wistful. Roddy, the recent two-straight-weeks nominee, tells him he should just settle down and enjoy himself, and thanks Gerry for his great play and all the chess games Roddy always has this conversation with a prospective evictee-about how wonderful they are. But it's smart gamesmanship. Marcellas and Jason talk about the upcoming vote, and Jason indicates that it looks like Amy has 3 sure votes to stay. Marcellas is pleased that his days of running away from Gerry are nearly over. Later, talking to Amy about future plans for the game, Marcellas jokes that he'd really only like to nominate one person, Roddy. The houseguests have some harmless fun later speculating on who would play them in a Big Brother "movie". It's mentioned that Jason Priestley (recently injured, though they don't know it) should play Jason. A porn star is suggested for the role of Tonya. Amy nominates Wilford Brimley for the role of Gerry, which doesn't appear to thrill him. What if I suggested Sally Struthers as Amy, he says. (It would have been very funny, is my answer). Jason and Gerry have a nice talk, in which Gerry makes it clear there are no hard feelings about the nomination> He tells Jason that he's grown in his eyes since the early days of the game. Jason says that he knows Gerry will affect more lives as a schoolteacher than he ever would on Big Brother. Gerry doesn't seem to be in a fighting mood. But if house history has taught us anything, he should have something up his sleeve yet.
