A picture of nothing - by Charlie Toft
Slipping on banana peels, exploding cigars-Wednesday was a pratfall-filled day in the Big Brother house. And the houseguest who had seemed so sure-footed over the last several weeks wound up with one huge pie in the face. The houseguests are awakened at 9:30 to the tune of Sheryl Crow, and even though it was a very short night in bed for most of them, the music puts them in good spirits. Chiara is trying to dance with Marcellas. But voting will begin almost immediately, so there won't be much time for frolicking. Amy is sitting quietly in the green chairs near the bathroom, waiting to have her pre-vote talk with Danielle. And there she is. Amy tells Danielle that she feels the other houseguests made promises to get her to nominate Roddy, and now they're turning their backs on her. Danielle declares that she doesn't really know how the vote is going, but that "if" Chiara does not get evicted, she'll see to it that Amy is protected from Chiara's revenge. Danielle says she will keep her word to Amy-problem is, she made a contradictory promise to Chiara that she would vote to keep her. Danielle's initial hasty promise to Amy before the nominations has come back to haunt her, and only minutes before the voting begins. Danielle asks Amy if Marcellas definitely told her he would vote to evict Chiara (his last conversation with Danielle late the previous night implied he would vote to evict Roddy). Amy says that he did. Jason has been called in to vote. Before heading to the Diary Room he sticks his head in the bedroom door, perhaps just to see if there has somehow been a last-minute change of plans. And what do you know? Danielle walks over to him and says, "Opposite." Armed with that informative word, Jason heads off to vote (herpresumed meaning: we're now voting for Chiara instead of Roddy). Danielle again tells Amy how terrified she is that Roddy will be the one who removes her from the game, and Amy assures her she'll be fine. A few minutes later, in a gesture even more cryptic than "opposite", Danielle flashes a queen of spades at Lisa, which is presumably some kind of signal, goodness knows of what. Chiara uses some convoluted logic to explain why Amy wouldn't even be in the house if not for her-more on the subject of "unfairness". Chiara then says that if she were to nominate Amy, it wouldn't be out of revenge. Right. Amy talks to Roddy in the backyard, telling him all about what has just transpired-making sure he knows how she just saved him from that lying weasel, Danielle. Roddy, as usual, is bemused-he knows people want him out because of the game, but he feels they sort of like having him around too. Roddy heads inside to tell Chiara what he just heard from Amy-key point being that her "protector" Danielle has sold her out. Chiara says she'll believe it when she sees it-so far Danielle has seemed trustworthy to her. She suggests that maybe Danielle was just trying to keep the peace to keep Amy from going off the deep end. Roddy, clearly feeling he can safely look ahead now, talks to Lisa on the patio. He asks her if she knows about what he had going with Eric, and would she perhaps like to take his place? Lisa asks her what other deals he has going, and he says no deals, just some favors. She is noncommittal on her current situation with "deals". Lisa tells him she sticks with people until they show they are no longer relaible. Roddy continues, grumbling about how his relationship with Chiara is likely being portrayed on television-he suspects he's being painted as the one who's dumping her. With voting now concluded, the house now retreats into the hibernation stage, not to come to life again until after the new Head of Household is chosen, most likely. A few of the houseguests play cards; others try to nap. Roddy keeps joking that Sheryl Crow is hot for him. Possibly coincidentally, Amy says she thought at first that Roddy was older than his stated age of 30. Others agree with her. Some of the gang moves on to sunbathing. Chiara busies herself with tie-dye shirts. The cameras linger on the shirts for a while. It's the dog days, for certain. Gerry and Amy fiddle about with the Legos. Danielle is bouncing from room to room-she's seemed edgy, if not a little under the weather, since the morning drama. Perhaps desperate for anything to do, Jason gets an early start on dinner-tacos. Amy seems to like them especially. After dinner, Chiara gets an early start on packing. Roddy tells Gerry that he wasn't prepared to leave last week, but this time he is, and if he stays it will seem like a bonus. He says it would be fun to spend a night here alone after winning the game, alone with the knowledge that you really did it. Roddy also says he's never worn tie-dye before, which is not in the least surprising. Gerry observes that Marcellas is a weaker player with Amy in the house. Marcellas finally has a few words with Danielle about the last night's drama with Amy. He questions if Amy really has the skills necessary to play the game. Danielle says she's just going to keep on playing, but might be less vocal with chat about nominations and voting. Roddy has given a less-than-thrilled Chiara a book as a going-away present. She has given him a picture, and Big Brother has provided some wine for the couple. The last evening for Chiara and Roddy is turning out to be not-so-romantic. He is accusing her of not sticking up for him the way he has for her. He thinks she has taken advantage of him. She reminds him that she's practically volunteered to leave the house, which Roddy answers by saying that she's tired of the game, and not doing it for him. As is usual when they argue, Chiara ends up doing all the apologizing. The whole interminable scene looks like the sort of thing that a pair of teenagers would struggle through, and not two adults. The contrast with Eric and Lisa's last night is 180 degrees. The houseguests are cooking another dinner at 10 PM-pork chops. Gerry and Danielle have a fairly long conversation on the patio, talking some about parenting but also about the danger of Amy being in the house. They promise mutual support to each other. At dinner, the gang talks some more about Sheryl Crow, and Amy entertains everyone with chatter about the beauty pageant scene. Roddy and Chiara finish off the night in the hot tub. Thanks, you two, for giving us some of the dullest and most self-indulgent relationship chatter ever.
