Day 40 August 18, 2002 - Live Feed Updates  from BB3 Updates.com

Chiara Whining - by Charlie Toft

I guess after the morning sluggishness we’ve witnessed all summer, it had to happen eventually: today Big Brother introduced the concept of the pre-wake up call. At 9 AM a message jolted the houseguests, telling them that in half an hour, we’ll be waking you up. As Jason gets up, he tells Gerry that the houseguests are now in their final 40 days in the house—the halfway point has been passed.

Marcellas notices more blue bags in the house, and is concerned that it might mean having to get into another ridiculous outfit, this time for the veto competition. Chiara is complaining about a headache. The veto competition is coming up, and Roddy tells Chiara he’s not sure if he should try to win it, because it might make her chances worse. How Roddy using the veto could hurt Chiara’s chances is unclear, but she seems to agree with him. They talk about the strain of not seeing each other for 5 weeks after one is evicted, but Chiara is perhaps more bothered than Roddy.

As Marcellas guessed, the houseguests have been issued swimsuits and bathing caps. It’s time for the veto competition, which takes place off camera but appears to have involved slip ‘n slide in the backyard. And the winner is Gerry, the only person who has ever used the veto. Gerry loves the limelight, but there don’t seem to be early worries that he might try it again. Lisa groans that she really isn’t looking forward to another one of Gerry’s speeches.

Chiara is venting again to Roddy, saying that she wants to rip Amy’s larynx out. She tells Roddy he was right to call Amy trash; he points out that he has never said that. Roddy is starting to look fed up with the nonstop whining.

Lisa and Danielle are trying to lay the groundwork for voting out Roddy, which would mean breaking a promise to Amy. Apparently, the idea is for Lisa to cry and say that she wants to keep Chiara for now so she can have her own revenge—but this can’t happen until after the threat of veto has safely passed. Danielle talks about how awful Chiara has been acting—Roddy is a nice guy playing a game, she says, but Chiara has a mean streak.

Lisa says that Chiara has called for a meeting with the producers to make her case about “unfairness”. A few minutes later Chiara walks into the bedroom in tears. She sounds noncommittal about wanting to stay, given that Roddy is the competition. Amy, Chiara says, is on a power trip now after getting a taste of life outside the house. She says it would be wrong for Roddy to leave because of strategy and not because he’s unpopular, which makes you wonder how much Chiara understands about the game at all. Danielle and Lisa look like trapped animals as Chiara just keeps on rantin’.

Chiara asks for Roddy to be sent in. She says she thinks he’ll be voted out for strategy reasons, but since she’s not having fun she might just ask everyone to evict her instead. Roddy only hears the part about him possibly getting voted out, and asks her if she really thinks it could happen.

Roddy says it’s harder in here than he thought it would be, because he can’t control everyone the way he could control Josh. He implies that he’s just too smart for the pop culture-chatter crowd. Danielle and Jason, he says, are afraid to play against a strong player (his apparent thinking is that if Jason were a good player, Roddy would always know exactly what he’s doing). Chiara agrees—the weak players in the house outnumber them and voted a fellow weak player, Amy, back in. Chiara discusses hanging around L.A. until Roddy leaves the house; he tries to talk her out of it.

Away from the nominees, it’s a very slow and sleepy Sunday. Danielle plays solitaire, and Gerry does laundry. No one has made any sort of pitch to Gerry regarding the veto. Marcellas joins Danielle on the patio; she does some careful prodding regarding the possibility of voting for Roddy this week. Marcellas reminds her that Amy really wants to be the one who gets Chiara, and tells Danielle that if she tries to get the necessary votes and fails, both Amy and Roddy would be out to evict her.

Danielle is frustrated that Amy is putting personal factors ahead of the game. She continues to play up the danger of letting Roddy stay in the house. Danielle is bemoaning her promise to Amy that she would vote for Chiara—she says she only said that to protect Jason from getting nominated. Danielle works and works to get Marcellas to agree to evict Roddy, but he isn’t buying. He suggests that she’s obsessing too much on the threat of Roddy.

After getting up from his nap, Roddy hints that he’d like some time alone, so naturally Chiara joins him on the hammock. He tells her he’d rather not have some sort of scripted date like Eric and Lisa had, which comes across as the latest part of his effort to not to be seen as her boyfriend when the show is over.

Having struck out with Marcellas, Danielle returns to her new favorite strategy partner, Lisa. They talk about going to Amy separately to persuade her about evicting Roddy. If it were merely personal, Danielle says, she would want Chiara gone, but Roddy is the bigger threat—she knows he’ll nominate Jason if he gets Head of Household.

In the Head of Household room, Amy and Marcellas unload on Danielle, saying that she is trying to get other people to so her dirty work for her in the way of nominations. Marcellas repeats this to Lisa a few minutes later—not his wisest move. Unlike most people in the house, Lisa has the ability to sit, listen, and absorb information.

Amy has found out that alcohol has been provided, which makes her day. The group is relaxing, talking about their first impressions of each other in the house—they thought Jason would be a hard player. The booze is uncorked and tongues are loosened. The women sit around the table and engage in another explicit sex conversation, drinking wine when they have a “yes” answer to what they’ve done in the past. Roddy and Gerry play chess and try not to pay attention. The women request more alcohol.

Away from the others, Lisa asks Chiara if she really wants to stay, and Chiara says she does. Lisa smiles and gives her a hug. They carry on later in the hot tub, with Chiara getting the proverbial wet T-shirt. But Lisa has work to do before the night is over.

Amy reveals to Lisa that she wants Chiara out because she blames her primarily for her initial eviction (and not Roddy, who actually did nominate her). She tells Lisa flat out that she does not have any deal with Roddy, and claims that she will vote against him, just not now. Lisa tries to make the case for evicting Roddy, though not that forcefully. Amy says that Danielle is beginning to worry her with her pressure tactics.

Lisa reports this conversation to Danielle. They are both concerned that Marcellas is supporting Roddy and not merely supporting Amy’s urge to evict Chiara, but they seem to be wavering on evicting Roddy now.

Before bedtime, Marcellas and Amy continue in their Danielle-bashing vein from earlier in the evening. They suspect she’s better off financially than she’s letting on, and her constant talking about her financial situation is starting to irritate. He even mentions nominating her if he has the chance to do so. The arrival of a new ally for Marcellas has definitely pulling him away from Danielle—another interesting twist in Big Brother 3.
