Josh is Gone, Amy's Back, Eric's Not - by Charlie Toft
Thursday turned out to be the first day when a House of Household competition took place on the feeds rather than on television. And to say that the winner was a surprise would be an understatement. The “High Rent District” allies spend the morning hours talking about what they might do after the next Head of Household is decided. The prospect of a returning houseguest is another factor to consider. Marcellas and Danielle, and Lisa agree that Roddy and Chiara will forget all about their “Operation Revolving Door” idea if Eric comes back. Marcellas seems dead-set on nominating Gerry, but Danielle remains more interested in getting rid of Roddy. Gerry isn’t a threat to nominate you, Danielle reminds Marcellas. Outgoing head of Household Chiara is complaining about intrusive Diary Room questions—she wants to know why they won’t give their names out. Josh seems calm enough as he heads in to feed the lizards one last time. The feeds cut to the front of the house, where a man and a woman are apparently rehearsing the re-entry of the houseguest scheduled for tonight. Following up on his efforts of last night, Roddy is now trying out his sales pitch on Lisa, saying that Danielle and Marcellas have obviously turned Jason, and since neither of them are in an alliance, then maybe…? Lisa listens politely but doesn’t let on that none of this is news to her. Roddy then heads outside to flatter Gerry. Tellingly, Roddy has not attempted to sway Danielle at all in the last two days. Gerry mentions that he thinks the houseguests may have a say on who will be returning. Chiara doesn’t want him to say out loud—she believes that the producers change the game around once the houseguests get too savvy. It also seems that Gerry may want to see where everyone stands on who they want to see come back—he’s most worried about the possible return of Eric. There’s a little pre-show discussion of ho everyone will act if they win the $500,000. Roddy says he’ll be cool. Marcellas says he’ll cry. Danielle says she’ll scream and go “ghetto”, which she illustrates by screaming. The houseguests primp for the live show. Josh, who has been nearly invisible all day, gets his neck shaved by Roddy and is wearing a picture of his girlfriend. The houseguests have been told to wear bathing suits under their clothes, apparently for the head of Household competition. Cameras in the backyard show a tub. Anyone watching the feeds instead of the live TV show sees Josh leaving the house, Eric and Amy waiting by the front door for potential re-entry, and Amy going inside as the new 8th houseguest at 5:50 PM. The group, including Amy, is outside for the Head of Household competition, which involves sitting in a bathtub while disgusting things are poured in--last out wins. Roddy quits first, after squid are dumped in. The second thing added is seaweed and pond scum. Amy fills everyone in on how the evictees competed amongst themselves, and what happened while she was exiled in Mexico. She tells them that she was recognized down there, and that Marcellas has lots of fans. Someone at the grocery store asked her why she wasn’t buying cheese. Amy fills the houseguests in on the state of the world—Julia Roberts is married; coal miners trapped and then saved. She says that ratings for the show are very good, and says a few things about Internet coverage (yay!) In turn, the houseguests tell Amy what’s happened with them in the two weeks she’s been gone. After about 45 minutes of this, Jaosn announces that he might have to pee. There are a lot of groans. No one leaves, but at about the one hour mark, Marcellas, Gerry, and Danielle all leave at about the same time—perhaps they’ve realized that the other contenders for Head of Household are all pretty good from their standpoint. Chiara pours 10 gallons of slime into the tub. Marcellas and Gerry head for the shower. Jason appears to be negotiating with Amy—having already been voted out once, she’s understandably determined to win this time. Danielle and Marcellas are talking, and are a little worried—Jason had earlier told Marcellas he was staying in because he didn’t want Gerry to win, but now Gerry is out. They are concerned that Jason would refuse to nominate Roddy and Chiara. They’re figuring that Amy will, given that she blamed Roddy and Chiara for her own ouster. Chiara pours in buckets of (presumably dead) electric eels, and Lisa gives up. Gerry tells Marcellas that Josh told him that he was resentful of Gerry lording the veto over his head. He assures Marcellas that he doesn’t owe him anything. They agree that it was just Josh being Josh. At about the two-hour mark, Chiara dumps in cod liver oil, and Jason has had it. He congratulates Amy, the new Head of Household. Not everyone is happy, of course. Chiara says that Amy is the only person she feared winning, and is already assuming Amy will nominate Roddy. She and Roddy are figuring out the votes for re-entry, suspecting that Lisa probably voted to bring back Amy rather than Eric. Lisa is teary-eyed, perhaps feeling guilty about that vote. Chiara tells Danielle that if she and Roddy are nominated, she’ll try to win the veto and get Roddy off the block—that way, Roddy, Danielle, and Lisa would be three sure votes to keep her (this is inadvertently funny). But Chiara isn’t totally oblivious—she’s the first houseguest to get serious alone time with Amy, and uses the time to talk about how she put up Josh for the good of the house—the not-so-subtle message, Amy should now nominate the other house pariah, Gerry. Roddy is trying to work over the male half of the Amy/Marcellas pair, in the apparent belief that he’ll put in a good word with the Head of Hosuehold. Marcellas says he doesn’t really lie pressure tactics, but relates this to some of the things Gerry has been doing. Marcellas does ask him why a smart person would allow himself to become so close to a lightning rod like Josh. Marcellas comes back in to talk to Danielle, assuring her that Roddy didn’t turn his head. He tells her that Amy needs to nominate Chiara and Roddy together, for the same reason Roddy nominated Amy and Marcellas together. After Roddy is gone, they can turn their attention to Gerry. Dinner is calamari. Amy holds forth on her time in Mexico—it turns out she didn’t like it that much. The gang enters Amy’s new room, festooned with black satin sheets in the bed. There’s a group hot tub session later, with the strangeness of Amy’s return, and her experiences in the outside world, still the main topics of conversation.
