Roddy Confronts Josh - by Charlie Toft
Monday is the day that nominations are written in stone, following the veto meeting. Wednesday is the day of the eviction vote itself, with its temporary release from tension and playing the game. This may account for why Tuesday has seen the most memorable fights so far on Big Brother 3. Any thought that an end to 4 AM sleep times would get these sloths out of bed earlier has been nearly dispelled. Once again today, Gerry is up by 7:30, and by 11 only the three who spent the night in the Head of Household room have struggled awake. There’s some speculation on the potential for Josh to create chaos during the live show. Jason tells Roddy and Chiara that there is no delay on the live feeds, though the live TV show may be different. Jason appears to have enjoyed his first night in the inner sanctum—he says he didn’t mind the cot at all. He mentions that after only 5 weeks, he’s closer to the people in the house than he is to his friends in Mobile. The group has decided against dressing up in ‘80s outfits for the live show, on the theory that Josh likely won’t cooperate. Josh is spending the early part of the day feeding crickets to the lizards. Josh decides to make a last-ditch effort at staying in the house. He approaches Danielle and promises that he will vote for her in the finals if she votes to keep him this week. He says that he might have Gerry’s vote (basing this on his talk last night); with Danielle he would only need one more. Josh tells her that “playing the game” should mean evicting Roddy—she should think about her family. After he leaves, Danielle talks to herself, wondering why Gerry would turn on Roddy. “Think, Danielle, think!” she mutters. Danielle hunts down Lisa to give her the latest news. They say that even if Josh were to stay and win Head of Household Thursday, he would be sure to nominate Chiara, which is fine with them. They agree that the needed third vote would have to come from Marcellas; Jason won’t vote against Roddy and Gerry can’t be trusted (they’re no doubt wondering just how much of their plotting has gotten back to Josh via Gerry). Lisa understands the danger but sounds exhilarated too. She asks Danielle if she’s worried about breaking her promise to Chiara and Roddy, and Danielle answers no—I’ll say I did it for the game. However, this new plot unravels almost immediately. It starts when Marcellas comes up to Roddy in the kitchen to say that Josh has been asking him for his vote. Roddy coolly responds that Marcellas should remind Josh that he promised not to campaign. He waits a half hour, and then lowers the boom. Roddy confronts Josh on his campaigning, saying that he’s done nothing but try to make this week easier for him, and this is how he gets repaid. He accuses Josh of playing the “Roddy is a threat to win, and I’m not” card. Roddy gathers the houseguests and asks them: did Josh say this to you, or vice versa? And have I campaigned against Josh to any of you? Danielle denies that she approached Josh with a deal. Gerry admits that there were vague “discussions”. Lisa agrees with Josh that he asked her to use the veto on Roddy, but also said that it might be smart, at this stage of the game, to vote Roddy out. Roddy is incensed, and for his part, Josh is accusing Roddy of having orchestrated this whole week secretly with Chiara. Then Marcellas gets into it, telling Josh that the only person to blame for his nomination is himself. Josh scornfully replies that he’s still crying about the first week, and Marcellas comes back and says that you’re the reason I cried—every time you had the chance, you took the low road. He tells Josh that there are 11 people here who never want to see him again. Josh is dismissive of Marcellas’s right to speak for the house, but there’s applause from some of the others. Any chance of Marcellas coming to Josh’s rescue seems gone for good. Roddy heads off to shower and seems to want everything to die down. He apologizes for getting the rest of them involved. Gerry, who shares a bedroom with Josh, seems to be worried about reprisals (he really should be worried about reprisals from Danielle, who he exposed with his chatter to Josh). For some reason, Marcellas drops by the Head of Household room and admits that he had the “passing thought” of voting Roddy out, due to lingering bitterness about the Original Six. Roddy doesn’t understand why that should mean keeping Josh instead of him, and Marcellas, digging his hole a bit deeper, says he felt that Roddy was the mastermind and was in cahoots with Josh. Roddy takes the opportunity to say that he’s always been aware of the tricks Josh has been playing. They agree that Josh cared too much about the game and not enough about building relationships. Jason, who was practically invisible during the big fight, says that they should have compassion for Josh. Danielle doesn’t disagree, saying that once Josh may learn a lesson from this once he’s out of the house (apparently putting the “evict Roddy” talk to bed). Marcellas points out that if any of this argument makes it onto TV, Josh’s life could be ruined. He and Danielle don’t sound very reassured by anything Roddy said. Marcellas is pessimistic about his chances to go far in the game, but Danielle bucks him up, noting that friends have begun to turn on each other. Marcellas says that he wants to leave having a good relationship with everyone—except Josh. And Gerry. Oh—and Tonya. Josh has a somewhat pathetic conversation with Gerry later, saying that he’s been poor before and had to shoplift food. He can’t understand why Danielle has apparently turned down his deal. Gerry says that you shouldn’t play poker with Danielle—she holds her cards close. Josh hopes that he’ll at least be able to achieve his lifelong goal of getting on Letterman. Gerry and Roddy say that luck will be a major factor from here on in—that, and winning Head of Household. Things settle down considerably by dinnertime. Chiara is busying herself with some tarot cards. Josh joins everyone for a spaghetti dinner, but disappears into his room afterwards with the cards. Chiara fills Lisa in on the growing belief that everyone should agree ahead of time to nominate and evict the returning houseguest. The chances of this holding up seem slim, though—Lisa and Roddy already seem to want to give Eric a pass if he’s the lucky one. The rest of the night is taken up with the usual hot tubbing and movie/TV talk. At one point Gerry, Lisa, and Roddy move their chairs to the basketball court, away from the light of the house, in an attempt to see the meteor shower. There’s some talk about the day’s fight, though there’s little direct criticism of Josh. Roddy is mostly sorry that it went down the way it did. He remembers Josh telling the group about the telemarketing scam he worked for—Roddy wonders why anyone would come in the house saying that he used to lie for a living. Unless someone is lying now, Josh is down to his last 48 hours in the house.
