Josh Wallowing in Self Pity - by Charlie Toft

The relatively early turn-in times for the houseguests lately may be paying dividends, in the sense of there being more morning action for us. Sure, we’ve got Gerry cleaning the pool and doing his laundry—that’s old hat. But here it is, not quite 9 AM, and Marcellas is out on the patio.

Gerry starts out by speculating that there’s “trouble in paradise” between Roddy and Chiara. He suspects that they may have planned to fight in front of the others, as part of a campaign to be seen as a non-couple. Gerry adds how much he hates sleeping with Josh—he dreamed about beating Josh up (don’t we all have those dreams sometimes?) Marcellas doesn’t say much; he’s waiting for the right moment to speak his mind.

Marcellas begins by saying that this is hard to bring up, but there’s a perception around the house that you’re “hygienically challenged”. He brings up Gerry’s coughing, his general sweatiness, and his washing clothes in the sink. There are people who believe Gerry shouldn’t be cooking for the group. Of course, Marcellas phrases this as being a topic of overall house concern, and not primarily his own.

Gerry says he appreciates Marcellas telling him outright, because he can’t afford to give anyone a reason to nominate him. He is wondering, though, who it was that brought up the clothes in the sink—was it Danielle? Marcellas says it’s unfair to ask him. Gerry goes on to complain that there’s too much shallowness in the house, even from Roddy. He says that they may have been able to come up with a justification for breaking their promises and voting out Roddy after all, but Josh couldn’t behave himself.

The veto meeting is coming up soon. Marcellas points out that the possibility of the veto has lost its power since Gerry used it that first time, because the houseguests are accounting for its potential in their plotting. The two of them agree that Lisa is impressive now that she’s playing the game for real, no longer just “the girlfriend”.

Big Brother wakes the houseguests up at 11 AM in preparation for the veto meeting. Marcellas runs his theory that Roddy and Chiara are staging fights past Lisa and Danielle, and they say they suspect it too, though Danielle says she thinks Roddy eventually will dump Chiara for real. There is general scorn at Chiara—Lisa says she told the Diary Room that “girl power” is dead as far as she’s concerned. There’s some gossip about whether Roddy comes from a moneyed background; Danielle, who has talked more than any of them about how she needs the prize money, is at the forefront of this talk.

The veto meeting takes place off-camera, and when coverage resumes Chiara is apologizing for things that were said—it appears that there may have been a bit of a scene made (Chiara later says that the Diary Room has asked her whether Josh can be trusted to not freak out during the live show).  Josh stays out of his room long enough to tell Roddy that he hopes he doesn’t give away the game for the sake of Chiara. Josh heads back to his room and sullenly stares at the lizard. He chats with them occasionally.

The other houseguests studiously avoid talking to or even appearing to notice Josh, but they seem in good enough moods otherwise. The lack of any game talk makes it clear that once again, the power of veto has gone unused. There is agreement that there likely won’t be any social occasion prior to Josh’s likely eviction as there was for Amy and for Eric and Lisa.

The conversation is dull enough (general chatter about food, movies, the X-Men, and whether or not naps should be taken) so that Josh’s afternoon-long bonding with the lizards seems like a decent alternative for the cameras. He may want to look into becoming a herpetologist when he leaves the house. The others have come across some games—magnetic darts, croquet, and another unspecified game—that are apparently meant as practice for the next food challenge.

As the dinner hour nears, Josh is still in there with the lizards. Chiara starts talking about her youthful experiences with the drug crowd, stories which shock Lisa and Danielle and drive Roddy from the room. Chiara catches up with him and defends her “I’ll do what I want” policy towards drugs; Roddy says he isn’t criticizing her choices but says he’s never used them. He mentions a high school acquaintance, the smartest and most attractive of his friends, who was reduced to prostitution by drugs.

After dinner, while Jason practices darts, Josh walks by and actually has something to say, asking him why he voted to evict Eric. Jason just says he has his reasons, which will be clear to all eventually. Josh is wallowing in self-pity, saying that he probably won’t end up marrying his girlfriend now, since she could no doubt do better. He feels that the game has made him out to be the sort of person he really isn’t, but Jason reminds him not to confuse the house with real life. Josh also complains about the lack of good conversation (try talking to a non-lizard for a change).

In truth, the others have been hanging out in the hot tub, mostly talking about celebrities. Most of them have a moment tonight where they criticize the re-introduced houseguest idea yet again. Consensus seems to be that only Eric will really have a chance to ingratiate himself back into the mix.

Marcellas and Danielle do some grumbling later in their bedroom, complaining about the strong-arming of Jason by Roddy and Chiara, and about Gerry following them everywhere. Gerry has actual strategy advice for Josh before bedtime, telling him that he should try to be cool—advice that’s coming three days too late—and that he should talk to Danielle, because she plays the game “like a guy.” It’s the closest Josh has done to campaigning since he was nominated.

During a pre-bedtime chess match, Josh tells Roddy that the other houseguests aren’t playing the game yet, because if they were, then Roddy would be leaving. There is yet another strange argument between Chiara and Roddy before bedtime, where they accuse each other of showing disrespect. Chiara doesn’t think Roddy should continue to maintain a relationship with a man (Josh) who has cursed her, while Roddy says he’s only trying to keep Josh from blowing up completely.

Josh stops by to chat with Danielle, who has some of the same advice Gerry had—don’t hide out in your room. She says she’s sorry Josh has to go through this, and says she’ll be fair when casting her vote. Before heading to sleep, Lisa, Danielle, and Marcellas speculate yet again on the temptation of evicting Roddy—inevitably, they return to the subject at least once a day. Jason is spending the night on a cot in the Head of Household room, and isn’t in on the latest discussion.

If they’re going to come to a firm decision, it will have to be soon.
