Josh Alone - by Charlie Toft
The life of a Head of Household is not all sunshine and moonbeams. On Saturday morning, Chiara grumbles that she and Roddy have now reached the 20-year marriage stage—they don’t even touch in bed anymore. Hey Chiara—you just nominated the guy for eviction. A little understanding, please. Chiara is getting no love from onetime ally Lisa. She talks over the current situation with Marcellas and Danielle. The notion of using the veto on Josh and turning around to vote out Roddy is brought up once again. The three of them agree that Chiara has been lying about her role in the most recent voting, but Lisa says that Roddy is still the more dangerous player, because he is Chiara’s backbone. Lisa still seems anti-Josh above all else, but Marcellas points out that an eviction of Roddy now would leave Chiara defenseless, since she can’t win Head of Household again next week. Having been awakened much earlier than usual, the houseguests are stumbling around outside during the morning and chatting idly. Gerry manages to bore both Roddy and Marcellas in turn. The feeds are in and out for the next couple of hours, and staffers can be heard explaining to the houseguests that there are “technical difficulties” of some kind. By early afternoon we learn that the veto competition has come and gone; it involved seeing various house events on the plasma screen and having to put them in chronological order. It’s not immediately clear who won—perhaps evidence that the veto is proving to be a non-issue within the house--and some of the houseguests rush off to get their naps in. Josh and Marcellas speculate on how they are appearing on television, having noticed that the shots of the evicted houseguests seem to conform with a stereotype (e.g., Amy shown holding a drink). Josh campaigned hard to stay in the house after his first nomination, but he sounds defeated now. Talking to Marcellas, Josh admits for the first time that he was the mysterious “fourth vote” to keep Lori in the house way back when. It’s a bid to gain credibility; unfortunately, he just can’t help but put his foot in it. Josh tells Marcellas that he definitely would have been voted out as the first evicted; only Gerry’s veto saved him. Marcellas is in tears after this—a reminder of how difficult the early days of the game were, and of his continuing debt to Gerry. Lisa and Chiara try to assure Marcellas that what Josh said isn’t true, with Chiara attacking Josh for his insensitivity. Josh tries to apologize for hurting Marcellas’s feelings, but repeats that he was only trying to tell him the truth, as he feels his exit is being arranged now as surely as Marcellas’s was then (and Josh is mostly right about that). Over an hour after the competition took place, we finally get confirmation of who has the power of veto: Lisa. It doesn’t sound like she’s going to use the power, since two of her least favorite people are nominated as it is. In fact (referring now to the houseguest who will be returning), Lisa states that she’s not all that sure she really wants Eric to come back, since he would never ally with her against Roddy. She warns Danielle and Marcellas that evicting Roddy now would strand them with an angry Chiara as well as Josh. Lisa sounds as if she is reinterpreting the entire first month of the game in light of her new negative feelings about Roddy and Chiara. The America’s Choice competition is announced (the houseguests will get a blender, microwave, or a massage chair), with little of the fanfare that accompanied the possibility of getting a letter from home. In the hammock, Roddy and Chiara express what seems to be a universal resentment towards the returning houseguest. Even Eric, Roddy says, shouldn’t get a second chance when the rest of them have only one. Later on, after abs class (led today by Roddy), Gerry asks how fair is it that they’ve been stuck in the house with Josh while the evictees have been in the Caribbean? Josh emerges to help with dinner. Roddy offers to give Jason one of his medallions that has been blessed by the pope—the last one he still owns (bribery to keep Jason on the team?) Gerry puts Marcellas in an uncomfortable spot when he says that he will never turn on him and Danielle. Marcellas replies that he’ll always keep his word because he owes Gerry for the first week. Gerry’s response: “And because you like me, right?” Josh fights back tears later as he tells Roddy that he’d rather be evicted than in the house with him gone. Roddy calls for an emergency game of duckball to cheer him up (good luck). Josh returns to bed for a while but eventually goes outside. Later on, he begs Lisa to use the veto to get Roddy off the block—it’s not fair that he should be in danger now because he spoke up for me, Josh says. He promises that if she doesn’t veto Roddy, he’ll be a pest the rest of the week (as opposed to how he’s been so far, apparently). Chiara wants to clear the air with Marcellas over his allegedly telling Josh that the Head of Household has become “all-powerful”. She reiterates that though she thinks people have been evicted on the merits and not because the deck has been stacked, this time she wanted people’s word that Josh would go rather than Roddy. As it happens, at least two houseguests (Gerry and Danielle) have come out of the Diary Room tonight saying that they were asked about perhaps voting to evict Roddy. Past midnight, while the other houseguests (except the long-since-to-bed Gerry) banter out on the patio, a disconsolate Josh plays solitaire alone in the living room. It’s a pathetic sight. The house’s first power broker seems a nearly broken man.
