Josh Freaks Out - by Charlie Toft
Early Friday morning, the plasma screen in the living room of the Big Brother house displays the words “Expect the Unexpected”. It proves to be an apt motto for one of the more emotionally fraught days in the show’s history. The houseguests have an early wake-up call for the morning food competition. Gerry notices the screen and points it out to Danielle, who says that “Expect the Unexpected” scares her. Josh complains that the food people from the week just past didn’t eat enough, and their rations might be cut as a result. Danielle and Marcellas talk briefly about the various possibilities for the nominations; they assume that one will be Josh but are apprehensive about the other. The food competition is a big version of the game that the houseguests have been practicing on—they are asked to pull out tubes from a framework without collapsing the other tubes. What is written on the tubes is what they get to eat for the week. They are able to come up with a well-balanced selection, and all seem pleased. After the competition, Chiara comes up to Jason and asks him not to reveal that she voted to evict Lisa—she’s unaware that everyone in the house knows already. She says that she will confront Josh with evidence of his various lies when she nominates him. There is further speculation over what the big announcement will be. Marcellas jokes that it means Amy is coming back. Gerry throws out some ideas. Just after noon the feeds cut out briefly while the houseguests are informed of the show’s promised twist—the evictees will compete to come back into the house. They are shown a video of Lori, Tonya, and Amy partying it up in their respective resorts. Everyone wants to talk about the meaning of the twist. Jason suspects that the second four evicted may have a similar chance. Gerry jokes that the house budget is so low because of what is being spent on the vacations. Marcellas says that he’d like to see Lori come back in, because she has no baggage or strong connections. Chiara goes in to clean the bathroom and finds a disgusting “present” that Josh left in the toilet. It’s an interesting prank to pull on the Head of Household right before nominations. And in fact, Chiara now begins to lay her groundwork. She summons Gerry to her room. Chiara tells Gerry that she’s thinking of nominating him, but says that she has every intention of seeing to it that it’s a unanimous vote to evict Josh. She wants Gerry’s assurance that he won’t use the veto if he wins it, and he agrees. Roddy enters the room. Chiara blurts out that she might actually nominate Roddy--assuming she can get assurances from the others that they will actually vote out Josh--because Roddy is among those who have a deal with Josh. Roddy, needless to say, is surprised. “Have you been figuring this out without me?” he asks. Chaira says that if Roddy were to get evicted, she’d go out with him. The pair tries to nail down everyone’s promise. Roddy wants Gerry’s assurance that he won’t nominate either he or Chiara the next time he’s Head of Household. Gerry agrees. Chiara gets Jason’s word that he would vote out Josh against anyone else. Lisa is shocked but agrees as well. Danielle says that she wouldn’t put Roddy up in Chiara’s position, but sure, why not? She’ll vote for Josh too. And Marcellas tells Chiara she didn’t even need to ask him. Instead of licking her chops at the surprising turn of events, Danielle talks the plan over with Roddy. She again says that she doesn’t like the idea—things could backfire on them. Wouldn’t it be safer to put up Gerry instead? She reiterates that you should never nominate someone that you aren’t prepared to see leave. Danielle and her allies talk over whether their promises to Chiara include the promise not to use a veto on Josh—indicating that they are at least considering a double-cross. Just before the ceremony, Roddy again says that he’s unhappy—he wasn’t consulted beforehand. Chiara tells him that she’s standing up for the house by engineering Josh’s eviction. Also, nominating her boyfriend proves that they’re playing the game (thereby making them look less threatening), and they got a deal from Gerry besides. Roddy is still apprehensive. He talks to Jason just before the ceremony, and while Jason says he will have his support, he still thinks that putting Roddy up is a bad idea. We’re away while the nominations occur, and come back eager to see how Josh is taking the news. Answer: He’s packing his bags. Chiara has apparently nailed Josh for telling her that Lisa was plotting against her. Josh yells to Lisa that it was Roddy behind that strategy. Josh and Roddy go at it in the kitchen—Josh is furious that his alleged partners sold him out, while Roddy reminds Josh that he’s nominated too, precisely because he was a Josh supporter. Josh continues to pack amid speculation he’s going to walk right out of the house. The news that Chiara voted to evict Lisa came out in the back-and-forth, and Chiara tries to mend fences, explaining to Lisa that she only voted to evict her because they knew it would be a tie that way. Lisa knows this isn’t true, and she and Danielle have a laugh about it. Lisa, at least, sounds as if she might be considering voting to evict Roddy, due to worries about being his target again. After Josh comes back from wherever he was—the feeds were off him while he was presumably getting a pep talk--Roddy gathers everyone together on the patio. He says the houseguests should avoid talking about the game this coming week (fat chance) and concentrate on just having a good time. Josh mutters that he’ll give it a shot. Chiara tries again to convince Lisa that she was persuaded to vote to evict her by Josh’s lies, or by her knowledge that it would end up in a tie, or something. Chiara admits she hasn’t always felt that close to Lisa. It’s hard to see how much of this Lisa is buying, though she already knows that they Chiara and Roddy had no plans for the vote ending in a tie. Danielle pops in later and Chiara tries to do some female bonding, referring to Danielle as almost a mother figure in the house. It’s still just early evening but things calm are calming down. Gerry reveals that Josh has already asked him to use the veto power. Josh attempts to lay out his version of events to Danielle later, saying that his mistrust for the women began when Tonya was first invited into the original Cartel. His main message is that Chiara can’t be trusted. After Josh leaves, Danielle asks Marcellas if maybe, just maybe, they should consider using the veto to save Josh, and then vote out Roddy. They’re concerned about being outnumbered again if Eric were to come back to the house, and are not yet sure they can trust Lisa. Marcellas suspects (correctly) that Gerry may have cut another deal with Roddy and Chiara to avoid nomination. Marcellas admits that evicting Roddy is tempting. Josh and Roddy have an emotional talk before bed. He swears he’s always been loyal and that he’s been blamed for a lot of scheming that isn’t his fault. Roddy tries to settle Josh down and get him to stop discussing the game. Roddy reassures him of his continuing friendship. Josh won’t hear it: “How do you expect me to survive here this week?” he asks, on the verge of tears. It’s a question the whole Big Brother audience is asking.
