Chiara Under Pressure - by Charlie Toft

With everyone walking in and out of bedrooms and whispering on Saturday, Big Brother is starting to resemble a cross between two venerable cinematic traditions: the cloak-and-dagger thriller and the screwball comedy. The houseguests are technically woken up at 10, but take their sweet time actually stumbling out of bed. Danielle mentions that her tooth-grinding I starting to get on people’s nerves and may necessitate a change of bedrooms. Marcellas is wondering why they are being awakened every day when there’s nothing to do. He vents a little more, telling Roddy that it’s getting harder for him to disguise his contempt for Gerry and Josh.

The veto competition gets under way (off-camera) around 11:30. When we return, a card game is in progress and there’s no immediate indication of who won the power of veto. But within a half hour, conversation makes it clear that Chiara won—probably the most interesting possible choice. She could choose to save her friend/alliance partner Lisa. So who would Gerry then nominate? Josh or Roddy? He’s cut deals with both. Marcellas or Danielle? He thinks he’s aligned with both. Jason?

Chiara and Lisa re already discussing a deal/threat combo: telling Gerry to nominate Josh, and buy himself some extra time; or don’t nominate him and get voted out next week (for some reason, these threat scenarios always assume that winning Head of Household will be no problem at all). Chiara is looking for advice from all over. Danielle tells her that she was in the same position when she had the power of veto—unable to safely use the power for fear that the Head of Household wouldn’t make the desired replacement nomination. Chiara doesn’t think she can afford to use the veto without a guarantee that Josh would be put up, because she’s afraid Roddy or Danielle might be the substitute. When she suggests that Lisa leaving might help her, since they would be unlikely to evict any more women soon, Roddy says (lies) that the men/women competition never comes up.

The houseguests are told about the America’s Choice competition, where someone will receive a letter from home. The two in the house with spouses and children, Gerry and Danielle, seem the most emotional about the prospect, and many of the houseguests actually talk to the cameras and make pitches for them to get the reward. Gerry, who has just received some things from home as Head of Household, throws his support to Danielle. Eric is telling Chiara what he should say to Gerry—namely, that it just isn’t right to keep a Josh in over someone like me. It’s important that Gerry know how unified the house is about this, he says. Eric is now expressing some irritation with Roddy—it would mean a lot if Roddy would make a pitch to Gerry, he says. But Roddy refuses, because of his agreement with Josh. Later he and Lisa tell Roddy point blank that it feels as if he is actually siding with Josh over them. An unintentionally funny overtone to the Roddy/Eric discussions is their shared assumption that Lisa is a definite goner.

Now Eric gets his chance with Gerry in the Head of Household room. Eric is calmly reminding Gerry of the danger of allying with Josh, while Gerry again says (as he did to Lisa) that the nominations were all about strategy, nothing more. Once again, Eric says that he knows he has the votes to stay in the house, including Gerry’s vote if needed. Josh is eavesdropping outside the room and is able to hear much of the conversation. He immediately runs off to Danielle to warn her about the danger that she or Roddy might get nominated. Josh tells her she absolutely must persuade Chiara not to use the veto. Danielle pretends to be concerned—in fact, she and Chiara have a good laugh about it. Danielle tells her that while Eric is a good guy and all, Lisa needs to stay. She repeats this later for Lisa’s benefit and asks for her trust. To make sure of everything, Danielle heads in to see Gerry, who gives her the reassuring news that he would probably be forced to nominate Roddy if Chiara exercised the veto.

Out in the hammock, Chiara (big mouth) suddenly says that she sense that Eric would be evicted in the event of a 3-3 tie. Part of Danielle’s plan had been secrecy; that’s now potentially blown. All the men (except Gerry) wind up in one of the bedrooms, where Eric recaps yet again what he said to Gerry. Josh and Roddy are going over the votes. They suggest talking to Marcellas (who has now left), getting him to see why he should perhaps think about evicting Lisa. It almost seems as if every houseguest is in 3 places at once, listening in on strategy or offering opinions.

Away from the hubbub, Roddy and Danielle make some small talk about intrusive Diary Room questions and how they never talk about the evicted houseguests. It’s now dinnertime and the houseguests have split up between the food competition winners and the losers. Afterwards Roddy has some quiet time with Lisa, which mostly amounts to him telling her how terrible it is that she was nominated and how he really tried to go all out for her and Eric. By the end of this Lisa is actually apologizing for making him feel bad. Josh corners Jason and asks him who he would nominate if he won Head of Household. Jason is his typically noncommittal and naïve-seeming self (“I feel I’m out of the loop,” he says); Danielle will have to hide him under a rock for the next 5 days.

Everyone seems to be burned-out on the game-playing. The houseguests settle into an unconscious if telling division: Josh, Roddy, and Eric playing cards and sitting in the hot tub; the women and Marcellas (joined later by Jason) talking about movie stars and singers. Jason later tells Marcellas and Danielle about his earlier meeting with Josh, and how he had to play dumb. They’re delighted, but realize that they may have to start getting their hands dirty as early as next week. Danielle has talked about how hard she’s working; when she’s alone she talks to herself about how she can’t play any harder, and then repeats “500 Gs” to herself as motivation.

Lisa and Eric head to bed and engage in some early going-away talk—she’s afraid he’ll be with another girl after this is over. She tells him that he’s done some of the most romantic things for her in the last month. The two of them really are hard to dislike lying there in the dark, making their little plans. Roddy holds forth at the hot tub later but isn’t up to his usual level of wit—perhaps he’s getting worried—and all are in bed by the stunningly early hour of 2 AM. And still one more full day of zaniness before Chiara announces her veto decision.
