Amy Loses It - by Charlie Toft

Tuesday night is shaping up as the time to stay tuned so far this year on Big Brother. Sure, it's a little inconvenient for those in the East-the good stuff tends to come around midnight in the house-but it's well worth the wait. Gerry is up early as usual, riding the elliptical trainer and losing his daily two pounds, when he bumps into Eric. He is awake so he can request some pain medication for Lisa, who was in and out of sleep most of the night. But soon enough Eric has returned to bed and it's once again quiet till noon.

Late morning/early afternoon topics of discussion include Gerry's abortive acting career, the proper way to keep score during the upcoming house chess tournament, and Jason's relationship with his parents. Gerry tells Roddy that the house is like a white-collar prison. However, at least in prison there's the theoretical possibility of excitement. Lisa is up and about and appears to be a little better.

Marcellas still sounds a little peeved at Amy. He wonders why she seems so impressed at the advice Roddy gave her but ignored the same advice coming from him. Marcellas is also upset at her request to get at least one vote to stay-what difference does it make, he asks. Amy seems fairly relaxed so far though, chatting about life in the south and her childhood. When Jason makes a crack about a "typical woman", Amy fires back "You don't know what a typical woman is!"

Mid-afternoon and Eric and Roddy are playing chess, which isn't all that exciting to watch but at least engages the mind. The other houseguests, most of whom have been awake only three hours, look like they're threatening to head back to sleep. Big Brother should consider a fire drill, something. Everyone lies about outside. Roddy talks about his past girlfriends and his reluctance to commit to marriage, and Chiara does not freak out-well, unless you consider her musing about whether they would be allowed to come back to the house for a wedding freaking out. Chiara later tells Josh that her little fling with Roddy (if that's what it is) has entered its "golden years", so perhaps she's getting disenchanted.

Amy is disenchanted too. She tells Jason that she was hurt by something he said earlier. She also frets about going home, and is worried about what people might have seen on the Internet. She's a little calmer with Marcellas later, as they go over their plans for eviction night. Amy asks for his help putting together an outfit for the big night.

Marcellas keeps his composure a little later under surprise questioning from Chaira, who asks him if it's true that he wants to nominate the couples. Marcellas says that such talk is really all Josh's fault. Chiara says that if she wins head of Household, she wants to nominate Josh and Roddy, assuming that would ensure Josh's ouster, but Marcellas reminds her that Roddy is considered a major threat and would likely go instead. He reiterates that Amy has been getting on his nerves-the time she's spent with Josh, and what he sees as her campaigning.

That situation is defused, but another talk with Amy makes it clear that Marcellas has had enough of her. She's nearly in tears at the prospect of leaving unanimously-"a slap in the face". She needs that vote to keep from being humiliated at home. Marcellas again says he feels she's campaigning to stay. Amy says something which Marcellas interprets as her thinking she already has the one vote, and he's concerned by this.

Roddy and Eric are joined in the hot tub by Josh, who wants to talk about the future-just two days now till the new Head of Household is named. The men are wondering, somewhat disingenuously, why the girls seem paranoid about being outnumbered. They talk about who to nominate next and Marcellas and Danielle are the two names that come up most often. Jason later joins them and mentions that he had to tell Amy directly that he would be voting to evict her.

Amy is getting worse as the night goes on, barely able to hold it together. Again she tries to impress upon Marcellas the importance of getting this one vote, for the sake of her dignity. The other houseguests are aware of what's going on; Danielle in particular tries to referee. But Marcellas now lays into her. The only reason I'm even nominated is that I'm close to you, he screams. He brings up her drinking during the gourmet dinner and basically tells her she brought it all on herself. Amy cries throughout. The two of them finally collapse in tears and a hug.

Chiara says it's time for a meeting, and everyone gathers in the living room where the players one by one tell Amy why she's special and what they'll take away from having known her. Amy, now more composed, tells the others she believes she'll come out of this a better person, having learned a lot about the right way to treat others. Applause and little sniffles all around. Later, Chiara shows her sincerity by telling Roddy she's made up a derisive cheer for when Amy walks out the door.

In a bedroom strategy session that runs till (you guessed it) after 4 AM, Danielle, Marcellas, and Jason talk things over. It looks more and more as if their alliance may have to make itself known next week. Jason is told that he's a possible nominee, if only as a "pawn" (Chiara has said she will nominate Josh and Jason). Danielle feels that it will soon be her turn-Roddy's group senses that she's smart. The group tentatively settles on nominating Roddy and Josh with the intention of voting out Roddy (or Eric if Roddy is vetoed). Amy's long goodbye is nearly at an end, the hardcore gaming is about to resume.
