Veto? What Veto?- by Charlie Toft
Big Brother entered the dog days on Saturday. With the next evictee choice seemingly a done deal, there's a minimum of scheming. Even the veto competition was anticlimactic. Just before 10 AM Big Brother announces a lockdown: go inside and draw the shades. Gerry, the only houseguest who's even awake, complies. He plays cards some more. The other houseguests are permitted to sleep in a bit longer before being roused. Gerry cooks bacon and pancakes for everyone. Marcellas is trying to rally after his post-nomination depression. He tells Danielle and Jason that he does want to stay, but is worried that it will be another case of the "pawn" getting evicted. Danielle runs down the list for him-he has enough sure votes to stay. Jason, who is also there, gives Marcellas his support too, in his typically noncommittal way. Marcellas responds by telling Jason that he would never nominate him as a pawn-he'll only nominate people he feels need to go. The houseguests take even longer than usual in the bathroom for some reason. Amy searches for cheese on the Sub of the Day; one of this weeks prizes is a free lunch from Subway every day. Roddy is learning how to shuffle cards. CBS doesn't talk much about the ennui when they run those commercials about the excitement of the live feeds. The veto competition is set for the early afternoon, and it's a form of lawn pool, played with croquet mallets. The Lizard Cam is on as the game is being played, but the occasional voice in the background can be discerned. There are periodic reminders to call shots, but the lizards remain blissfully unaware of the drama. The competition goes longer than one might think, considering no one really wants the veto, but when the dust settles it turns out that Roddy's Mini-Me, Eric, is the winner. He jokes that he'll finally get on TV, since to this point he has not been nominated or been in a power position. Eric and Roddy head into the Head of Household quarters, where Roddy fumes about Josh. He's noticed Josh hanging out with Gerry all of a sudden. Both of them seem convinced now the Josh is disloyal, and they question if they're making a mistake by letting him stick around. But they tentatively decide to leave things as they are-getting Amy out is too important, says Roddy. While heading back inside after the competition, Gerry tells Amy he envies her and pities Marcellas. Amy is in the bedroom, talking resignedly about all the fun summer things that await her outside of the house. Marcellas sounds depressed as well. Spirits perk up when the houseguests are informed of the America's Choice vote, which will allow one of them to have a "date" for a gourmet meal. There are calls to "Vote for me!" Marcellas makes a request that gay America come out and vote for him. Self-described house genius Roddy opines that the Internet demographic is in love with Josh, who will probably win as a result. Later in the afternoon Eric and Lisa have gone back to bed, and Roddy seems to be having trouble staying awake in the hammock. Roddy had said that with nothing to do here, you start to atrophy, and the houseguests are proving his point. Marcellas takes advantage of the quiet to chat with Danielle about where they stand. Danielle is worried that the women are disappearing. They say that if one of them wins the next Head of Household, they should nominate either Eric or Roddy, and the woman not linked to him (Eric/Chiara or Roddy/Lisa, in other words). This would force (for example) Roddy to choose between fighting to save Eric or Chiara. Marcellas still has ideas about getting rid of Josh, but Danielle is more focused on the Eric/Roddy threat. She thinks that she'll be an alliance target soon, because she's hard to read. Marcellas relates a recent discussion where he urged Jason to get off the fence. Jason pledged his support, says Marcellas. After Lisa and Chiara awaken, they join Danielle and Josh in bashing Gerry's alleged bad hygiene once again. Coming from the people who have been busily popping zits and tweezing ingrown hairs for the last several days, it's an ironic accusation. The guys move on to a variation on their throwing-ducks-at-targets game, while Lisa and Danielle listen to Chiara moon about Roddy, to the point of imagining how baby names would go with Roddy's last name. Most of the house winds up in the hot tub eventually, looking to kill off the night. Danielle is grossed out by conditions in the tub though, because Gerry was in there. There's another round of Gerry-bashing which is both hilariously paranoid and sort of cruel. Marcellas actually announces that he will start wearing flip-flops in the shower, for fear of Gerry's germs. Jason and Josh sit by the hot tub and talk about Gerry too, although we've heard Josh's grievances so many times before. Jason says he'd like to take Chiara to dinner if he wins America's Choice-assuming he can get Roddy's permission. His innocent crush on the very non-innocent Chiara is cute, but he needs to wise up. Late in the evening Chiara tells Roddy about their hypothetical future daughter Ella, and Roddy manages to listen without groaning. The group, including Amy, talks about their favorite Madonna song. And the Roddy-Josh-Eric trio has another strategy session in the hot tub, where Roddy expresses his discomfort with the women going off to talk together. Before bedtime Roddy and Chiara have what amounts to a near-argument about Lisa-Roddy complains that he hardly knows her and would have no trouble voting her out. He tells her that he's afraid to talk to Lisa, because of how jealously Chiara might react. And the fearless internet viewer thinks: "Oh please start fighting, it's going to be a very boring night otherwise".
