Danielle's 15 Seconds of Fame - by Charlie Toft
It looks like the producers of Big Brother got lucky this year, or maybe they’ve gotten better at finding the right mix of people to produce “good television”. The show is shaping up just like a real soap opera, on both personal and the political levels. For example Tonya announces on Saturday morning that she thinks one of her breast implants may be leaking, which might force her to leave the show. This is perhaps not the wisest thing to announce right after having been nominated. We first hear about in a morning conversation with Gerry. Strangely they cover most of the same topics he once chatted about with Lori, kids, family and the things they miss. Gerry, perhaps shocked that someone is actually speaking to him, mostly listens for a change. Will one divorced mother replace another in the role of Gerry’s morning confidant? And will it be the same kiss of death for Tonya as it was for the last person who filled the role? The veto challenge is coming up a little later. Marcellas tells Gerry that he doesn’t expect the veto to be used—the alliance knows that one of their members will be leaving in any event, so sacrificing a polarizing figure like Josh is the best they could hope to do. Gerry suggests, unrealistically, that if Josh made a complete apology to him, he might be able to save himself. The mind boggles at that statement, and we begin to wonder whether Gerry’s casting call was held at a mental hospital. Josh not only calls Gerry a Nazi at every opportunity, he was also caught cheating in the recent food challenge. Josh’s only hope is to have his nomination vetoed, which is a 5 to 1 longshot by our calculations. Later in the morning the houseguests are in an outside lockdown as Big Brother sets up the veto challenge game. Josh takes the opportunity to apologize, but being Josh, he’s not exactly oozing with sincerity. In fact, it sounds to us like no apology at all. He says that everything he’s done was justified, but he knows people are upset at him and he’s sorry about that. Eric immediately chimes in with the first good joke we’ve heard him tell, saying that he too wants to apologize: “for being unable to do pull-ups”. That remark brings down the house, and Josh sheepishly sits down as everyone laughs. The veto competition is held indoors (and off the feeds), but when coverage resumes around 2 PM we see that Danielle, one of the few houseguests who showed an interest in winning the veto challenge, did indeed win. And, in a moment of pure insanity, she tries to convince Marcellas that they should spare Josh and nominate Gerry is his place. That move could only benefit the alliance, and neither Marcellas nor Danielle are members of that group. We begin to see a quick exit from the game in Danielle’s future. Marcellas’ voice is pained as he tells her he just can’t do that to Gerry only a week after Gerry saved him. Danielle replies that Josh has promised to go after Gerry and leave them alone. She says that Gerry “could come back to haunt us”—something about him is untrustworthy, but Josh is a straight shooter. She never offers a clear reason why she thinks Josh is suddenly trustworthy after all the lying, cheating and rude behavior he’s displayed, and it seems to us that she’s just plain stupid. Marcellas finally makes it clear that he won’t go along with any scheme that involves a pardon for Josh. So Danielle starts speculating about using the veto on Tonya to bring about a Gerry vs. Josh cage match. Now we begin to understand that perhaps Danielle badly wants some “face time” on the TV show, and is willing to cut her own throat in the game in order to take center stage for a dramatic moment. Marcellas is clearly torn by this discussion, but doesn’t say no to her last idea. He’s very nervous about Danielle, and tells her that he’ll come after her if he finds out he’s being played. After she leaves, however, Marcellas tells Gerry and Amy that he still wants to see Josh evicted. There are also some developments in the Roddy – Chiara - Amy “love triangle”. Chiara complains to Roddy that he didn’t pick her for his winning food challenge team. Josh tells Roddy about a conversation he had with Amy the previous night, saying Amy complained that Roddy was trying to change her. Roddy is clearly unhappy with Amy for sharing the details of their strategy talks with others. Roddy continues to work all possible angles, first sucking up to Danielle and then strategizing with Eric. The two of them sound as if they’re working up a rationalization for voting against Tonya, and say that they eventually expected the alliance to fall apart anyway. Roddy is surprised when Eric tells him he doesn’t want to face him in the endgame. That seems obvious enough, Roddy has heard it from almost everyone, but hearing that your most trusted alliance partner feels that way too has to be disturbing. Whatever credit we had given Eric for being a smart player went up in smoke at that exact moment. The alliance gets their first inkling of Danielle’s plans when she tells Roddy and Chiara that she’s considering using the veto in order to get Gerry nominated. Roddy at first hardly believes it, but then goes to great lengths to encourage her. Things aren’t going so well for Roddy elsewhere in the house, because a little later Chiara, Lisa, and Tonya rip into him about Amy. They believe that Roddy’s lying about his talks with Amy, and is actually encouraging her infatuation. It’s suggested that Chiara should start avoiding Roddy, and perhaps start hanging around Jason more. Chiara won’t let go of Roddy so easily and decides to make an assault on both fronts, saying she’ll kill Amy with kindness. The whole conversation seems like a flashback to a 7th grade slumber party. Late at night Danielle heads back to the Head of Household room to work on Marcellas one more time. Marcellas is worried about leaving Josh in the game, and Danielle replies, “We’ve got Josh.” Getting rid of Gerry, she says, would be “giving the people what they want.” Marcellas is openly wary now: “I’m not scared of anyone in the house but you.” He sings a different tune later while talking with Roddy, Marcellas is quite skilled at presenting different sides of himself to different houseguests. He tells Roddy that he thinks Danielle is working strictly for her own benefit. Roddy makes blatant male bonding appeals, suggesting that it would be cowardly to nominate a strong player out of fear, and criticizing the “Jerry Springer” element in the house: the bickering women. The last little drama of Marcellas’ day involves Amy, who has been talking to Josh this evening and telling him she doesn’t want him to leave. Amy is in a venting mood—she’s frustrated and bored. Marcellas warns her about talking to Josh, telling her that she has no idea what he might be saying about her. He also counsels against interfering with Roddy and Chiara. “I hate it here,” pouts Amy. “I can’t have any fun. It’s like summer camp. Except dangerous.” Amy’s rival Chiara is at this very moment lying in the hammock with Roddy, who is attempting to settle her down. That can usually be accomplished by telling her what a great, sweet, amazing girl she is. Roddy promises her that the insinuating questions she’s been getting about him and Amy in the Diary Room are just Big Brother’s way of stirring up drama and there’s nothing to the rumors. We almost believe him, because these houseguests don’t seem to need any help from the stage managers, they’ve created plenty of drama on their own.
