Amy Stays Calm - by Charlie Toft
Post-veto day is a letdown for the houseguests and their watchers. With nothing as interesting as peanut butter peek-a-boo to look forward to, it’s the first of what promises to be many summer days where absolutely nothing happens—nothing even by the generous standards of Big Brother. The days dawns with Gerry working on laundry and Lori drinking her coffee and tossing out an occasional irrelevancy. She notices her clothes are still a bit damp from the dryer and wonders if someone put them in the toilet. There may one day come a time when we are nostalgic for these scenes of early morning tenderness, but that day seems distant right now. They spend three hours pretty much to themselves and the conversation covers all the same basic points we’ve grown to know, with Lori’s divorce getting yet another rehashing. The two of them talk about being aware of their isolation from the others. If Gerry didn’t realize beforehand that the veto would make him a pariah, he certainly knows it now. Gerry takes yet another opportunity to wallow in his emotions from the veto speech, it seems he isn’t going to cede the spotlight graciously. Lori gives him affirmation: if she’s disappointed about not having her nomination vetoed, she doesn’t say so. By late morning everyone else is starting to wake up. After last night’s “I Never” game, one begins to wonder just where the conversation will go over the next two months—what else can they possibly talk about? In the case of Tonya, it’s a long discussion about her cats—she has four of them. One of them cost her $2500 in vet bills. She says, “I can always find another man. I want a cat.” So far she’s had more cats than husbands, but she’s still young. Lori and Gerry talk about being bored--that makes it unanimous. Gerry says he needs to work with his hands—“give me something to make.” He seems drained, suffering from a letdown after his Big Speech. Gerry is resigned to being the next out if he doesn’t win Head of Household, and predicts that after he and Lori leave, the show will become very boring indeed, with just exercising going on. “I think there is an element of vacuousness in the house,” says Gerry, which is a little like saying there’s an element of ice at the South Pole. Later on, with alliance members present, Gerry has an opening to bring up his speech. He tells them that he was speaking only for himself at the meeting, but they appear unmoved and uninterested. Marcellas is talking to Roddy and Chiara, who are still in bed at noon. Roddy congratulates him on his reprieve. He says it would be “brilliant” if Gerry won Head of Household and then nominated Marcellas and Danielle, and it’s hard to disagree with that. Chiara and Tonya start talking about nose-picking, and, we begin to see where future conversations in this house are headed. The daily Amy/Marcellas card game gets under way. Whatever else one might say about Amy, she has a talent for entertaining chatter that is distinctly Southern. She says she wants to start flirting with cute boys again, and mentions how much she likes to kiss. Danielle points out that Amy looks like a Barbie doll, and Amy mentions that Barbie was her favorite toy growing up. If Amy’s hurting from her nomination, she isn’t showing it. Earlier in the kitchen, there was actually a semi-serious discussion about the meaning of life, with Roddy saying that life is “temporal”. Marcellas, who was present, is impressed, claiming that Roddy is “like the smartest guy in the world”, and he’s sexy too. Amy kids around about being attracted to Roddy. Marcellas tells Chiara that no matter how calm Amy may look, she’s worried about getting kicked out. With Amy present, Chiara says that she knows why Amy may feel vulnerable—after all, Lori was once the “safe” nominee and now looks to be a goner. But Lori flipped out, says Chiara. Roddy assures Amy that she’ll have his vote to stay, and he’s pretty sure that Eric and Josh will vote to keep her too. Amy promises them that her resolve for staying out of personal conversations is slipping, and that they’ll be hearing all of her “dirty laundry” eventually. By early evening she’s lying in the hammock with Marcellas, where the two of them dish about their housemates. Marcellas says there aren’t any lesbians in the house because they probably couldn’t find any interesting ones. Josh, who has had a quiet day to this point, tells Danielle about the first night strategy sessions, and assures her that the decision to get rid of Marcellas was based only on the perception that he was “negative”. Danielle tells Josh he should just be honest with Marcellas—it might work. She says she was no fan of Gerry’s speech, and that race is not a big factor in either her personal life or in the house. Eric is teaching Lisa how to play chess, and it’s not as bad as it sounds—he’s patient and she seems a quick learner. They’re also flirting again after a brief respite. There’s some teasing over which “couple” is being more public: Eric and Lisa or Roddy and Chiara. And here’s a new twist--Amy and Josh lie in the hammock and talk pleasantly. In the middle of the night, Roddy, Chiara and Josh are having trouble sleeping, so they head to the hot tub. The sun is already up and Josh jokes how beloved they must be—people heading to work and seeing these guys kick back with cigars in a hot tub. They discuss post-eviction scenarios, saying that if Marcellas wins Head of Household, they should try to talk him into nominating Gerry to go against Josh. Everyone else will put up Gerry without even being asked they figure. And they predict that no one will dare to use the veto after the storm that Gerry caused.
