Day 6 July 15, 2002 - Live Feed Updates

Marcellas is Saved by the Veto -by Charlie Toft

It was one of the wilder days in Big Brother history. There seems little doubt that it will become the most gossiped about—surpassing the Justin-Krista knife shocker, the Will/Nicole hot tub party, and Shannon’s toothbrush-in-the-toilet trick. There were many firsts: the first time a nominated houseguest was saved before a vote; the first time peanut butter was used as apparel. And for those voyeuristic sorts who have faithfully watched the feeds hoping for more than a fleeting glimpse of bare flesh, Monday, July 15th, was like bumping into Fort Knox after three years of fruitlessly panning for gold.

The day began like any other: Gerry and Lori sitting around talking. Gerry tells her he has decided to use the veto (no surprise), and that he’ll suggest to Lisa that she nominate Josh (the alliance seems already decided on Amy). He thinks Lisa would be smart to take his advice, Gerry and Lori don’t understand why the alliance would want a negative influence like Josh ruining the house atmosphere. They agree that Josh is panicking. Lori tells Gerry about the pre-bedtime blowup with Josh, when she revealed that she had spilled the beans to Marcellas about the alliance plans. She tries to reassure Gerry that she’ll be OK with however things play out (the fifth stage, acceptance). Gerry brings up Josh’s “blackface” comment from Saturday again, and how offended Marcellas was. He’s brought up his concern for racial issues several times in recent days. In fact, much of this Gerry/Lori talk has a definite “déjà vu all over again” quality; it’s so familiar now that it’s hard to believe the feeds only went live 5 days ago.

After the others begin to get up, Lori seeks out Amy and repeats the story about telling Marcellus about the plan. Amy has been under stress—she doesn’t really want to vote with the group anymore, and in fact, she hasn’t been part of it for a few days now. They agree that Josh is nervous and for good reason. The race issue comes up again, with Lori repeating Gerry’s contention that Lisa wouldn’t dare to nominate Danielle for fear of the racial implications.

Big Brother announces the veto meeting will be at noon, so there’s much scurrying about and dressing up because everyone knows this scene will be on TV. Gerry informs Lisa that he’d like to speak with her before the meeting; Lisa tells Tonya she doesn’t really want to hear from him. Gerry then takes Marcellas aside, delivering an amazingly pompous speech about the power that has been given to him, how it’s like God himself saying this is what he is meant to do. Marcellas says that the house has become Touched by an Angel vs. Baywatch. He hopes that Lisa will do the right thing: nominate Josh.

Marcellas has time to speak to Chiara and Roddy before the meeting. He tells them he knows about the Cartel’s plans, and that they should want Josh out of the house. They reassure Marcellas that they like him, and Chiara says that any decision about a new nominee will have to be made by Lisa. They also suggest to Marcellas that Gerry’s motives may not be entirely pure, and remind him that Gerry and Amy were both fully on board with the original Cartel decision. Marcellas is told that no matter who Lisa decides to put up as the new nominee, Lori will be getting the boot. Her edginess just makes people too uncomfortable, says Roddy. Before the meeting Josh tries to mend fences, telling Marcellas he had nothing to do with nominating him. Marcellas coolly replies that every other member of the Cartel has told him that it was Josh’s idea. Josh leaves, and clearly realizes the trouble he will be in if no one from the Cartel wins the next Head of Household.

Gerry officially informs Lisa that Marcellas’ nomination will be vetoed. Lisa wants to break the news to Amy, the new nominee, so it won’t be a total surprise at the meeting. Amy is called into a bedroom and Lisa tells her that Gerry “is going to take things his own way” with the veto. Amy calmly responds “I figured that” when Lisa gives her the news that she’ll be nominated. The last thing we hear before the feeds are cut off for the meeting is Lisa promising Amy that she has nothing to worry about, Lori is the true target.

After the meeting, there’s a card game on the patio. Marcellas waxes philosophical, saying that the real game is the game against yourself. He says yet again, “he needs to go,” referring to Josh. Gerry, still riding his wave of self-righteousness, suggests that he might become a new alliance target along with Jason, because they represent morality in the house. There’s a Cartel member listening in on this conversation: Roddy. He tells Marcellas that he’s pleased the house got to know him—everyone had assumed he didn’t want to be there, and that’s why everyone kept him at arm’s length. After Roddy leaves, Marcellas says that Roddy is the weakest link in the Cartel, because he has a heart.

But Roddy certainly hasn’t left the Cartel. Some members gather in the bathroom, where they lick their wounds after the meeting. Gerry apparently leveled an accusation of racism at Josh (and by implication at the whole group) when announcing his veto. They vent at Gerry, reiterating how dumb he was to turn his back on the alliance, while at the same time they worry about how it all will look on TV. Lisa even says that Gerry had told her that he was making the racism charge to help the show. While Josh frets—he senses he’ll be set up as the bad guy—Roddy reminds him that after all is said and done, the Cartel is still a solid six. Josh may be the face of the Cartel, but Roddy is looking more and more like the brains.
