Day 5 July 14, 2002 - Live Feed Updates

Calm Before the Storm - by Charlie Toft

Whether it’s just faithful observance of the Biblical day of rest, hangovers from the luau, or simple nervous anticipation of Veto Day, this Sunday in the Big Brother house is uneventful. Gerry, the earliest to bed the previous night, is up early today puttering about the pool. Lori and Marcellas soon come out to join him. With the two nominees and the man who has the chance to spare them all present, the discussion turns, not surprisingly, to the alliance and the alleged unfairness of the nominating process. Marcellas compares himself to a kid on the sidelines waiting to be picked for a game. He and Gerry do some more venting about Josh, who Marcellas likens to the Antichrist. Of course, Marcellas also compares him to Big Brother 2 winner Will Kirby, which from Josh’s standpoint may not be such a bad thing. The men think that Josh could be dangerous due to a lack of “impulse control”.

There is some speculation about Tonya’s interest in appearing in Playboy, and answering a question that no one asked, Marcellas announces that he will not be appearing in porno films after Big Brother. Gerry, who dropped a line from Macbeth during the luau, quotes Hamlet today. If he quotes one play a day for the next 5 weeks he can hit all of Shakespeare’s plays. Lori tells Gerry that she’s in the house for the experience more than for the money, a refrain we have often heard from houseguests who see the writing on the wall. Gerry explains Machiavelli to Lori. He talks about 16th century writers more than the average Big Brother contestant.

Danielle awakens. She tells Gerry and Lori the party the previous night was really fun, as she has little life outside or work and home and doesn’t get out much. By late morning everyone has fallen out of bed. Josh is still grumbling about Gerry’s backyard sundial. That contraption is a source of great pride for Gerry, and rightly so: it’s accurate to within a few minutes. Lori comes to Chiara, she wants to talk about the Friday night fight over Gerry not washing his hands. She explains to Chiara that people shouldn’t be in the house looking for every little problem, and it’s good to talk things out as soon as they occur. Perhaps taking this last bit of advice, Chiara immediately reports the conversation to Tonya. Lori isn’t helping herself any.

We see just how slow things get in the house when there are no competitions to prepare for and alliances are more or less settled. The most interesting thing anyone says all afternoon is when Lisa mentions that when her mother left her father, he retaliated by tattooing her name on the bottom of his foot. Tonya talks about her first husband hitting her, and says that she used to get so dark while tanning that you couldn’t see the bruises on her body. Marcellas vents some more about Josh, this time to Danielle. Not for the first time, Marcellas says of his main adversary, “He needs to go.” Danielle, as always, is only somewhat sympathetic. Marcellas says that since Josh always wants to be first, we should let him do the first round of post-eviction interviews.

The alliance members have been considering whether Marcellas should be spared. Tonya and Roddy believe that Marcellas may have his nomination vetoed, and suggest that perhaps Amy should be the replacement, since she doesn’t really interact with them at all. Roddy tries again to sound a sympathetic note regarding Lori, pointing out that she may feel insecure surrounded by younger and prettier women.

Chiara tells a story to Lisa and Tonya, and uses an elaborate code because she’s referring to someone who didn’t sign Big Brother release forms. The feeds go rolling on unblocked, and Chiara proceeds to describe the affair she had with a prominent New Yorker. Along the same lines, Amy later says she’s been asked not to sing so much, the show’s producers don’t want to pay rights fees to music publishers. The houseguests do group exercises—today is “abs day”. Amy won’t participate because she’s wearing a dress. She sits, eats peanut butter, and watches Danielle lead the others.

It’s dinnertime. Tonya says that she has a spider bite on her breasts and tries to get Jason look, to no avail. He blushes and quickly leaves the room. There’s some gametalk too—Lisa mentions that if Gerry announces his veto, she’ll have to pick a new nominee right away. Any strategizing will have to happen beforehand. The alliance has apparently settled on Amy as a replacement, and there’s even some talk of evicting Amy. Lori has so alienated everyone that she could easily be dealt with at some later time.

The boredom of house life spawns a horseshoes-like game called “dead duck”, which involves throwing rubber ducks at a basketball. Eric approaches it like a true athlete, with determination. He and Gerry quickly work out lingo—“good ducks” and “bad ducks” to describe the throws. Amy and Lori get involved, with Amy having a particularly good time.

The mood in the Head of Household room is strangely angry. Lisa, Chiara, and Tonya are sewing, preparing costumes for a bikini pageant set for the next day. Tonya complains that no one else is helping, and attacks the boring people who just want to play cards. Lisa snidely says “We’re just an antisocial little clique.” Lori eventually shows up to offer some assistance, but again puts her foot in her mouth by telling the women they don’t have to “waste” their night sewing.

Before bedtime, Lori picks a fight with Josh, telling him that Marcellas has been mistreated. Josh reminds her that she is protected, and tells her that she should “just relax and kick back.” The extent of how “protected” Lori is will be revealed tomorrow, when Gerry announces his veto decision.
