Day 4 July 13, 2002 - Live Feed Updates

Shaving Cream Bikinis -by Charlie Toft

Lori is up early this Saturday morning. Scratch that—she never went to bed. The woman who was nominated but told not to worry about it is quickly becoming a nervous wreck. Gerry gets up before the others again, and as always wants to talk strategy. Lori suggests that he not tell Lisa what he’s planning to do—Lisa is still in the alliance, after all. Lori tells him that she’s feeling strong right now—she’s met the demons head-on. Of course seeing those demons may have been a sleep-deprived hallucination. Amy comes out to tell Gerry that he should try persuading Lisa to nominate Josh instead. She’s never shown much interest in house machinations and tells Gerry that she’s just prepared to vote her conscience now.

The old actor in Gerry is clearly relishing the prospect of taking center stage. He tells Marcellas he’s thinking of waiting till the last minute before announcing his veto decision, for maximum drama and impact. Gerry spends much of his Saturday morning building a sundial in the backyard—telling time is a big issue in the clock-less house—and for some reason this activity irritates Josh.

At noon Big Brother announces that a luxury competition will be held in the backyard. The houseguests get into Hawaiian outfits, and after a long delay, Lisa reads the rules. The competition is a hunt for missing items within the house, and the winning team will get an outdoor luau while the losers are sequestered indoors. The contest is long and frustrating, with numerous incorrect items selected. In the end, the team of Gerry, Tonya, Marcellas, Amy, Lisa, and Eric win. Josh, who often seemed the most confused during the search of the house, takes defeat hard. But all is not lost for Josh--Big Brother presents the houseguests with a basketball, which Josh immediately starts using. Later on Marcellas will comment that his goal in the house is to never touch that ball.

In other sports news, Tonya and Chiara decide to take a shower together, and put on shaving cream “bathing suits”. They ask Amy is she’d like to join them. She declines and mutters something about how trashy some people are acting in here. Gerry is once again involved with his favorite sport, voting strategy. He pulls Danielle aside for a chat. Danielle is the opposite of Gerry, she’s committed to no strategy and has made few promises, while Gerry has tried to ally with everybody in just the first week. She tells Gerry she won’t announce her plans and isn’t interested in winning Head of Household.

Josh makes a comment about “blackface” that angers Marcellas, who was plenty mad at Josh to begin with. He’s riled enough to suggest that Josh rates a penalty nomination. Danielle is equally offended, but tries to play peacemaker. Tonya is surly. She says that people have been mouthing off about the shower incident and wonders what her boyfriend will say. She also accuses Lori of making catty, jealous remarks. Roddy suggests that Lori is just under stress, but Tonya isn’t moved. Her comments signal that Lori may be fast losing sympathy among the houseguests.

In the early evening the winning houseguests prepare for the luau, and even the losers dress up. The backyard is festooned with tikis. Josh salutes the winners with his usual charm: “May you all choke on lobster.” The losers eat well enough too, dining on scallops. A toast is offered: “To not having to eat with Amy and Gerry at the table.” Roddy holds forth on scientific and religious topics. Jason is asked what he would do if he had only one day left to live. Chiara, naturally, chimes in, “Please tell me you’d have sex.”

Back at the makeshift Hawaiian beach, the winners have eat their fill and relax with drinks in the hot tub. Gerry sings “Tiny Bubbles” intermittently. They slice a rich-looking cake and Amy and Marcellas begin talking about boyfriend preferences. Both agree that they like wealthy men. The end of the luau finds the women in a less than pleasant mood. Lisa goes into the Head of Household room venting about Gerry—he’s irritating and no one knows what he’s going to do regarding the veto, she says. Some are expressing frustration at the cameras, and showing concern about how their behavior (the shaving cream shower, for instance) could get edited into something titillating for the CBS audience. Tonya takes the philosophical route—“I just can’t live my life for other people”—but Chiara goes off on a tirade against the hypothetical 300 pound woman on the Internet who would dare to judge her.

The issue of Lori comes up again—she’s been asleep all evening after staying up the previous night. There’s general agreement she’s falling apart. Tonya refers to Lori’s excessive night-time sweating. Later on, Eric reiterates to Tonya, Chiara and Lisa that it still has to be Marcellas who gets voted out. He insists Lori might still be OK if she just relaxes a bit. Among the non-Cartel members, Eric says he’s most concerned with Jason (he’s inscrutable) and Gerry (he won’t stop scheming). Eric vows that Gerry is dead meat if he exercises the veto—it would be a total betrayal.

It’s past midnight now, but it’s never too late to play cards on Big Brother. Danielle and Chiara chat about Jason’s cuteness and about how Chiara wound up on the show—she was spotted in a mall by a talent scout on Memorial Day weekend, when casting was nearly complete. It seems that the shaving cream bikini girl was originally cast as an All-American girl. While Danielle and Chiara bond, Roddy tells Josh that he now thinks it should be Lori who leaves. Roddy says he doesn’t trust the women—they don’t play the game correctly. Josh sounds like he’s willing to think it over. Roddy is emerging as a liaison to Marcellas. He tells the nominee that he’s made a lot of progress, signaling to Marcellas that all may not be lost. They’re getting along well, it appears--a possible signal of a big change in plans.
