Day 3 July 12, 2002 - Live Feed Updates

Gerry on the Hot Seat -by Charlie Toft

It’s Friday in the house and Lori wakes up first. The past few days have been tough for her, and she’s sitting on the back porch alone, smoking and drinking coffee. By 8:00 Gerry has come out to join her, and it’s clear he’s still in the same philosophical mood as the prior night—trying to win trust of non-Cartel members. He tells Lori that while he’s still in it to win, it’s more important to have fun. He seems to be cheering Lori up (we’ll see how long that lasts). She too is determined to have fun, even if she’s only here for one more week. They’re in a generous mood towards the other houseguests, praising Roddy and Amy.

With the chance to speak uninterrupted, their conversation veers into strange new areas. Gerry unearths the news that Lori once dated a nudist—she admires their healthy attitude toward body image. Gerry agrees and begins to ramble on about gay couples who square dance. Lori says that she was voted “class clown” in high school. The two of them move on to discuss male/female roles, which segues into talk about their respective divorces. It’s an unusually long and emotional conversation by Big Brother standards, one that seems to be working wonders for the previously downcast Lori.

For his part, Gerry is ruminating on the irony of being on television now playing himself, after having been a struggling actor as a young man. He exclaims that this is one of the best conversations he’s ever had in his life, and he wishes he hadn’t fallen victim to playing the game. His competitiveness kept him from really getting to know the others. He does tell Lori that although he’s not sure what he’ll do if he wins the veto, he’ll have to regretfully vote against Marcellas if it comes to that. But ideally, both should stay. The other houseguests gradually awaken but it’s a dull afternoon for feed watchers, highlighted by shots of the lizards in their cage. The veto challenge is taking place outside during much of this time, and that’s off limits for internet viewers. By mid-afternoon the feeds are back to normal, and we get the first indication that it was a bad day for the Cartel—Josh telling Lori he hadn’t gone through all this work for nothing. Later on, Gerry is mentioned in ways that make it clear he won the veto challenge. There is general dread about what he might do with his newfound power.

Josh is in a grim mood and launches into a rant. He has it in for Amy, saying that she’ll likely be the second voted out because she’s so negative and contributes nothing. He’s angered at Lori and her lack of stability—she’ll never be able to hang on emotionally, he insists. Lisa reminds Gerry that he could just leave the nominations as they are—a possible reference to his promises to the Cartel--but Gerry won’t commit to anything.

The younger women have been together now for a few days and are apparently good enough friends to discuss their various strategies for what might be termed intimate grooming. Chiara volunteers that she wants breast implants if she wins the game.

Lori and Marcellas are finding a bond in their shared peril. During a conspiratorial chat in the kitchen, Marcellas tells her that the house is divided between the self-styled “beautiful people” and the “normal people”, and if he were to stay, he would work “like the Terminator” to destroy the clique. He is worried that survival in the game requires that “you have to become one of them”.

Lori remarks about how no one is alarmed when she and Marcellas speak confidentially—what damage can the two nominees do? She lets it slip that Gerry might veto a nomination, which might allow both her and Marcellas to stick around. In a later conversation, Gerry confirms that he will exercise his veto, but is uncertain of who the replacement nominee might be. He rambles on about wanting to leave with his integrity intact—always a tall order on Big Brother.

Marcellas’s sex life is the subject of much speculation. The women summon him for an interrogation, which leads to some rather intimate explanations. Most surprising is the revelation that he was engaged to a woman as recently as last summer. As sometimes happens when the houseguests begin to talk about the people in their lives, the feeds cut out just as Marcellas begins that emotional story.

Eric and Roddy sit on the back patio and play chess, which is becoming a house pastime of sorts. Eric refers to their carefree life in the house—a summer of chess, cigars, workouts, and tans. Hovering on the fringe of the game, Amy says her job description is to wear her pajamas and play cards. She claims that shuffling the deck is giving her carpal tunnel.

In the evening Josh gives Gerry a warning about talking outside the Cartel, and it turns out that Gerry’s problems are just beginning. A new controversy erupts, bizarre even by the standards of Big Brother. Gerry, it is rumored, does not wash his hands after using the bathroom! What’s more, he then goes directly into the kitchen and prepares food! Paranoia and confrontation ensue, led chiefly by Danielle and Tonya. Josh and Jason are present too, and while they aren’t thrilled with Gerry, they don’t want to go to war over the issue.

Lori comes on the scene and is informed of Gerry’s actions. She finds the whole thing overblown and defends her morning friend. What’s more, she says that talking behind Gerry’s back this way is two-faced. Danielle blows up, and Gerry is summoned for his reckoning. Danielle makes her succinct request: please wash after using the bathroom. Gerry, surprisingly, takes it in stride, though he asks why they didn’t just come to him instead of turning it into a major full-cast event. Lori and Danielle continue to argue about how appropriately the matter was handled.

As midnight passes, the new house dynamic is evident. Gerry and Amy, now clearly outside the Cartel, are strategizing with Marcellas and wondering how things can be turned to their advantage. Tonya is bedding down in the Head of Household room with her new ally, Lisa. The “mom’s alliance” talk is history; Lori is now beyond the pale. Chiara is infatuated with Jason, but spends her time in the hammock with Roddy. And Josh is running around proclaiming an “epiphany”, which those overhearing him deem just the latest in his string of lies.
