Welcome to RealityTVLinks.com! A Directory to Reality TV on the web. Day 1 July 10, 2002 - Live Feed Updates
The Games Begin - by Charlie Toft
The live Big Brother feeds become available just as the TV show premieres on the evening of Wednesday, July 10. We see that the gang of 12 has just won a food competition of some kind, and are preparing a meal. OK-- food, schmood.
What those obsessive enough to purchase the feeds want to know is what happened during the several days the houseguests have been sequestered, and pronto. Specifically, who's the first Head of Household, and which two houseguests have been marked for eviction?
Within two hours, the house conversation makes it clear: the first Head of Household is bartender Lisa, and the nominated houseguests are Fargo-talkin' single mom Lori and gay fashion stylist Marcellas. What's more, Marcellas is already being described as the person marked for eviction.
Other early conversations reveal that Josh may be the power behind Lisa's throne. Nominee Lori is already threatening to nominate Josh if she lives to fight another day. She's talking with Tonya, who resents that she's seen as just a blonde with big expensive breasts. The first cringe-inducing moment of the season follows immediately when Tonya calmly discusses the leakage in her saline implants. Luckily her plastic surgeon "Julio" was able to patch them up.
Tonya and Danielle speak later in the hot tub. The sight of Tonya in the hot tub is an eye-popping event that overshadows whatever they're talking about. The suggestion is made that the two of them plus Lori should form a tacit "mom's alliance". Tonya likes Lori and considers her trustworthy.
Amy, Marcellas, and Gerry are playing cards. Marcellas tells them that they appear to be his only supporters right now-he can see how the wind is blowing. Amy wears an Ole Miss t-shirt with the slogan "We're not snobs--we're just better than you." They remark on the presence of the Internet viewers.
This will apparently be the third straight Big Brother cast with no clue about what is shown on the net feeds. Amy says "Right now, I know there's someone sitting in front of their computer watching us," but she adds, "they can't hear us, thank God." Gerry points out that the Internet feed is on a slight delay and nothing will be broadcast that has the potential to be embarrassing-for instance, if he were to get undressed. We're certain nobody wants to see that, except perhaps his wife: Gerry is 51 and rather rotund. The houseguests gather on the back patio a little later, which gives viewers their first chance to try to distinguish between several similar-looking groups of people on the show. Lisa and Chiara are both thin young women with olive skin and long dark hair. Jason, Roddy and Eric all look basically alike, even in close-ups, because all three are fit young guys wearing baseball caps.
Eric, Roddy and Josh are fond of smoking cigars, which temporarily gives the patio an Algonquin Round Table feel. Then they start to talk and the difference is apparent. Someone compares Danielle's breast size to that of Al Roker. Lisa says they want to live up to the reason they're on the show: "They cast whores." Pet names for private body parts are discussed: "Coochie" and "Hammer" adorn the conversation.
Tonya talks about favorite haunts in her hometown of Las Vegas. She says that Lake Mead is not on the map, which will certainly be news to Rand McNally. Tonya wants everyone to visit her in Vegas when the show is over. That's another Big Brother cliché-the in-house fantasy that everyone will be best buddies once they're out of the house. They'll all come back for the wrap party at the end of the season, but only because their contract with CBS requires it.
Josh is loud and obnoxious, but not entirely without entertainment value. He relates a phone call he made to Mike Boogie, the rapping bar owner from Big Brother 2. A more-confused-than-usual Mike actually returned Josh's call. Sweet-looking Chiara talks long and loudly about taking Jason's virginity. This embarrasses poor Jason, who had earlier been talking with her about the Bible. Lori is in the kitchen with Jason and Tonya, and discovers that they are unaware of the strategy that has been agreed upon by "The Cartel", so Lori clues them in. An alliance was formed within a few hours of entering the house by the first three teams eliminated from the very first challenge. Those six houseguests agreed to vote for Lisa as Head of Household and to vote as a group to evict Marcellas.
Like many people who talk about "being in control", Lori seems on the edge of hysteria much of the time. She tells Jason and Tonya that although she's been told she's safe this round, she doesn't trust Josh. Lori knows that Josh is the ringleader--she calls him "a high-wire act". Jason agrees-he likes Josh, but zeroed in on him earlier as a strong threat. Josh walks by and Tonya tells him they were talking about what they should wear in Vegas. Josh takes great pains to try to reassure Lori that she was only nominated because she's so well-liked: nobody would ever prefer Marcellas to her. He tells her that it "truly is a compliment" to be nominated first, although it seems to us like being first off the boat at Omaha Beach on D-Day Josh lets Lori know that it's best to be on his side.
After midnight, tongues and hands become less restrained. Tonya squeezes Chiara's breast so Chiara grabs one of Tonya's breasts in return and comments on its saline-filled firmness. Danielle offers up the fact that she has had her tubes tied. Lisa and Eric are lying in the hammock, with Gerry in the vicinity. Lisa and Gerry try to explain the finer point of spades to Eric because once Marcellas is gone they'll need a new spades player.
Eric tells Lisa he wouldn't snuggle with any woman who has kids, or is in a relationship, or Amy, who's in a class by herself this season. The evening ends with one last hot tub session, quite late. Roddy tells Tonya that she isn't as one-dimensional as he had first thought. His bio says that he's a writer, and this writer begins to wonder: is that really the best compliment he can come up with?
